Mithali Raj: Super hit on the field and off the field

Indian women’s team skipper Mithali Raj has had a stellar ICC Women’s World Cup and she has admirably led the team to their second-ever World Cup final. Raj is second in the tally of most runs in the tournament with 392 runs from eight matches, only behind Australia’s Ellyse Perry by just 12 runs.

While Raj has the chance to finish the tournament as the leading scorer this edition, she is already leading the chart when it comes to popularity.

The 34-year-old has dominated the Twitter Emoji Leaderboard – becoming the most mentioned captain emoji on Twitter during the tournament.

In a global first for women’s sport on Twitter, ICC introduced a Twitter emoji for each of the team captains.

Commenting on this, Aneesh Madani, head of Sports Partnerships, Asia Pacific, Twitter said, “It has been a thrilling Women’s Cricket World Cup on the field, and India’s impressive run to the final has supercharged the conversation on Twitter. Already, there have been eighteen times more Tweets with the official hashtag than the last Women’s Cricket World Cup! The Women’s Cricket World also became the first nation vs nation sporting event to have emojis of the captains as a special feature on Twitter. It has been a big hit with fans and India captain Mithali Raj has dominated the leader board with eighty four percent of all captain emoji Tweets mentioning her hashtag #MithaliRaj.”

“With India playing a blockbuster final against England, expect a special, record breaking Sunday on Twitter”, he added.
