Campaign for sensitizing on menstrual hygiene issues among adolescent girls

1.17Lakh girls in 1400 government schools to be covered

Udaipur : Lack of awareness on Menstrual Hygiene results into a continuous challenge in lives of Adolescent Girls specially those in rural areas, due to the deep rooted taboo and ignorance in the minds of people. In order to create awareness and sensitize the young girls about menstrual hygiene management, the district administration is going to launch a special campaign ‘ Chuppi Todo, Khulkar Baat Karo’ for girls studying in class 6 to 12th in all government schools in Udaipur.

The project is the brainchild of Collector Anandi which aims to create a positive attitude among the adolescent school girls about menstruation and treating it as a perfectly normal and healthy biological process of a woman body. Girls would be encouraged to speak about their menstrual related issues with medical experts who would go to their schools in a scheduled manner.  Over 1 Lakh 17 thousand  girls studying in 1400 upper primary,  secondary and senior secondary government schools would be covered under the campaign.

The first phase would take off from July 8 onwards covering tribal remote blocks of Kotra, Jhadol Phalasia and Saira in Gogunda. The campaign would be executed in six such stages wherein medical teams and counsellors would reach out the adolescent girls to educate them on hygienic management of periods. A short film on menstrual hygiene management made by UNICEF too would be screened for adolescent girls and their mothers.

District Education Officer Shivji Gaur said a website is being developed specially for the campaign and feedback from the teachers and students would be taken from each school. The medical teams would conduct a health check up of the girls and those found with lower hameoglobin levels would be given iron pills. “Due to social misconception, lack of proper understanding about the human biological development many girls suffer physically and psychologically. It leads to serious health problems and anemia in young girls” a senior doctor says.
