Five of the best Mexican cities

On glimpsing Mexico’s coastline, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d already found your paradise in the gentle roll of the ocean, the white sand between your toes and the handy palm tree shading your view. But the idyllic shores don’t cover even a small portion of what this huge and complex country has to offer. Venture inland, and you’ll find foot-stomping fiestas, truly ancient cuisine and the mighty buildings where colonists made their mark. These are the best of Mexico’s Cities.

Oaxaca

Though Oaxaca has plenty of pre and post-conquest history to get stuck into, what makes this state capital unique is the artisan vibe, which switches easily from laid-back to lively, depending on whether there’s a fiesta going on. And once you’ve exhausted the city, head out on horseback to the Sierra Norte mountains or feast your eyes (and stomach) at the markets and villages of the Valles Centrales, still home to indigenous groups like the Zapotec.

Mazatlan

A resort town with a difference, Mazatlan is situated on the Pacific coast of Mexico and offers the alluring combination of historical interest and a beautiful beach just minutes away from the centre.

There’s a somewhat touristic vibe in the Zona Dorada, but a trip into the old town will reward you with cobblestone alleyways, boutique stores and renovated 19th century façades.

Mexico City

Mexico’s number one metropolis is not to be missed and not just for the astonishing panorama which greets you from the heights of the Torre Latino America. The Surrealist art heritage, the expansive museums, the tempting eats and lively bars: all these are reasons for your visit. With the nearby pyramids at Teotihuacan, not to mention a myriad distinct suburbs to explore on the well-connected metro system, Mexico City deserves a holiday of its own.

Guanajuato

The Northern Highlands of Mexico are not known for their tourism, but the region holds many gems for the overseas visitor.  As a UNESCO World Heritage site, a significant player in the War of Independence and a popular student haven, Guanajuato city has many faces. It’s also a hillside settlement of incredible beauty, founded as a mining town, with architecture full of Baroque drama and opulence.

Mérida

To the east lies the colonial settlement of Mérida. Famous nearby landmarks like Chichen Itza may get all the publicity, but with its monumental cathedral, broad boulevards and oddly European feel, Mérida is a Mexican city like no other. Add to this a blend of authentic Mayan gastronomy and the city is more than just a base for exploring the wider region.

Mexico is a land of extraordinary breadth, with natural and man-made gems both on and off the shore. The best way to get the most out of cheap holidays to Mexico is to combine your beach stay with a day or two exploring the cities; after sampling your first corn-filled tamale, witnessing a costumed dance or basking in the elegance of a grand colonial plaza, you’ll agree it was worth it.
