Nadal Beat Cilic 6-2 6-4 6-3. Whether Cilic can make a real impact this year is very much up for debate but there was never much doubt about this match. Nadal came through relatively easily.
Ferrer beat Raonic 4-6 6-2 6-3 6-4. A stunning tournament from the young Canadian was ended last night by David Ferrer. Raonic relies on his huge serve and after starting very well Ferrer soon got a read on the serve and from there it was straightforward.
Murray beat Melzer 6-3 6-1 6-1. A strong performance by Murray but a truly awful one from Melzer. Hard to read too much into Murray’s form from this match but he looks dangerous again this year.
Dolgopolov beat Soderling 1-6 6-3 6-1 4-6 6-2. For a long time, since he was 17 years old I’ve believed Dolgopolov can make a major impact on tour. Last night he recovered from a very poor first set to beat Robin Soderling in five. The focus may be on Soderling’s poor play but Dolgopolov had 50 winners to 23 unforced errors.
Novak Djokovic beat Nicolas Almagro 6-3 6-4 6-0. It’s a shame that Almagro sometimes seems to give up on matches and that was the case here. Easy win for Djokovic whgo is playing very well at the moment.
Tomas Berdych beat Fernando Verdasco 6-4 6-2 6-3. Berdych hit just 8 unforced errors and smashed 32 winners to destroy Verdasco with ease. Berdych v Djokovic could be an excellent match if both men keep up their level.
Stanislas Wawrinka beat Andy Roddick 6-3 6-4 6-4. Wawrinka was excellent all match and hit 67 winners to just 19 unforced errors making him a credible threat to Roger Federer in the next round. Roddick though helped Wawrinka’s statistics with poor shots down the middle. I suggest a change of coach and mentality asap.
Federer beat Robredo 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-2. Easy enough win for Federer in a match that could have been simpler against a guy like Robredo. He’s through and that’s what really matters. Good tournament form Robredo.

WTA

Caroline Wozniacki beat Anastasija Sevastova 6-3 6-4. Wozniacki might not be popular with some people for her style of play but personally I enjoy it. She wins matches by being consistently good and she did it again against Sevastova, recovering from going an early break down. Good effort from the Latvian.
Francesca Schiavone beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4 1-6 16-14. The pair battled for 5 hours in a quite astonishing contest. Both looked very tired by the end but they put on a hell of a show. Great win for Schiavone but Wozniacki will make her run in the next round.
Andrea Petkovic beat Maria Sharapova 6-2 6-3. When it all clicks for Petkovic she can play wonderfully well. It did click for her and all the while Sharapova was struggling. Sharapova can get back to the top but right now she is quite some way off it. Petkorazzi dances her way through with just 9 unforced errors.
Na Li beat Victoria Azarenka 6-3 6-3. Not the best of matches for Azarenka who just couldn’t match Li. She had her chances but there was never too much doubt who was winning. Li has yet to lose this year.
Agnieszka Radwanska beat Shuai Peng 7-5 3-6 7-5. This match had all the drama you could want with the deciding set swinging one way and then the other. Peng had a few match points but Radwanska’s fight helped her through. People shouldn’t be fooled, Radwanska may not show much emotion on court but her battling victories in this tournament with a nasty injury show that she cares a lot.
Kim Clijsters beat Ekaterina Makarova 7-6 6-2. Clijsters played quite poorly in the first set and has lost the form that she showed in her first two rounds. Still, she won through easily enough in the end. Makarova had a great tournament and should be proud of herself. Clijsters may be a heavy favourite but then she hasn’t managed to win this tournament in 8 attmpts.
Petra Kvitova beat Flavia Pennetta 3-6 6-3 6-3. Another good match for the very dangerous Kvitova. If she gets her game going then she is as good as anyone on the women’s tour and right now it is going. She’ll fancy her chances against Vera Zvonareva.
Vera Zvonareva beat Iveta Benesova 6-4 6-1. A few early problems for the Russian but she soon brushed aside Benesova. She will have to play better against Kvitova if Kvitova keeps up her form.
