Were you aware that alligators eat sharks? Wel they do. Scientists have just discovered that American Alligators have developed a taste for small sharks, and stingrays too.
In the first ever study of this weird nature phenomenon researchers at Kansas State University have documented American alligators feasting on four species of shark on the Pacific and Gulf coasts of America as wlel as one species of stingray.
“Before this, there have only been a few observations from an island off the Georgia coast, but the new findings document the occurrence of these interactions from the Atlantic coast of Georgia around the Florida peninsula to the Gulf Coast and Florida panhandle,” says James Nifong, postdoctoral researcher with the Kansas Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at Kansas State University.
Alligators normally eat fish, snails and small shellfish but Nifong says they are opportunistic predators, which is why they have been feasting on small sharks and stingrays
“If a small shark swims by an alligator and the alligator feels like it can take the shark down, it will” says Nitong.
