Japanese Company Launches Drive-Thru Funerals

Losing a friend or loved one is a sad occasion that many of us dread. If we do lose someone close to us, chances are there will be a Funeral and if they liked you enough, you’ll be invited. Traditional funerals are starting to become a thing of the past in Japan, as a Japanese funeral parlor has set up a service that allows people to pay their respects in a drive-through fashion.

The elderly population in Japan is growing larger each year, and may become one of the first countries to be ultra-aged. Currently 27.3% of the 127 million Japanese are 65 or older, which is set to increase to 37.7%. That means there are approximately 34 million people 65 or older in Japan – that’s more than the entire population of Australia!

The funeral parlor’s president, Masao Ogiwara, notes that elderly people may pass on the chance of going to a funeral, as they may need to ask for help moving around or getting out of their car.  “Older people may hesitate to attend a funeral because they have to ask for help to get out of the car,” Ogiwara said, adding “But we want as many people as possible to be able to come to say farewell to their friends or neighbours.

The firm’s new drive-through funeral service enables people to pay their respects from the comfort of their own car. The car’s occupant(s) will offer traditional incense through the window, which will be recorded and relayed to venue inside so they can witness the offering.
