The Men who dared to think beyond

Life wasn’t easy at our college. The studies were over-taxing, and so were the teachers; everyone was expecting more and more out of everyone. And, obviously, there was a certain class of people who under-performed, but managed to clear most of the tests in the first semester. Their thoughts betrayed them; they sought help from the teachers. The help wasn’t coming; maybe the teachers wanted them to be self-managing, in short – Apne Pairon per Khada dekhna chahte they.

It all began with the top floor of 40th block. The four rooms, where the leaders dwelled, where the dreamers dwelt. They wanted something out of their lives, something meaningful, something rewarding, something extraordinary.

Jai Pratap Singh™, born with natural leadership qualities with a mind to match took the lead and everybody followed. Originally, the Chootiya Gang consisted of students like Bade Sahab™, Netaji™, Justice Tidda™, Alexander™, Kaka™, Bippin™ and Mitha™. become the self-appointed managers of the group, his managerial skill are un-parrarelled. He soon became the face of the HLG to the public. In fact, he was what the general public considered the face of a typical HLG.

In fact, it has become more of a cliché, Bade Sahab™ bina toh HLG ka ‘H’ bilkul bekaar hai… haan aapne sahi socha, handsome bhi aur harami bhi...

Their don’t-give-a-shit-to-no-one attitude had magical effects on the population of the college students, and left everyone else secretly wishing that they were also a part of this esteemed and great company. Rumours that Steven Spielberg was in town and he wanted some of these guys to star in one of his films seriously confirmed that these guys were the best-looking-guys not only in the district of Gandycity, but the whole state. Jai Pratap Singh™ majestically turned down his offer, and said that he was a true son of his soil, and he would not leave his country for anything (Ohh! The patriotism discernable in him by his people, since his birth, he definitely has un-matched love for his country and countrymen). Steven Spielberg was of course very disappointed, but he left as a proud HLGian™, and thus the culture of HLG spread to the Americas as well. We can very much expect a feature film, or very much a documentary on the lives of these noble beings from whom the qualities of true and noble human beings emanated.

People were soon filling up the ranks in HLG, people from all around the university. HLG Ethos™ became a commonplace among most of the students, and the people who resisted became outcastes. The number of Handsome Law Guys™ went up to 45, that is, half the guys of the university. What is more is that their dominion had no ends, whatever was said was final, absolute, irrevocable and conclusive. People thought, that this might be the beginning of a fascist nation, but that is not the truth. Jai Pratap had different plans on mind, and world-domination wasn’t one of them. The gentle giant, as his friends sometimes address to him, was in truth a man of morals, dignity and respect for humans (yes, my dear girls, that’s the truth, he has been misunderstood since the very beginning).

Bade Sahab™, who has a very much daunting personality, is in fact the most polite and respectable student in the university. The words, which are allegedly abusive in nature are out of the frustration in his mind, the management of the HLG™ is by no means an easy task. Girls have a special place in his heart (just his heart), and he has unlimited respect for them, even though his mouth might defy these words. All that glitters is not gold, and all that … okay, forget it, I don’t have the qualities of a good lawyer (jyada jhooth bolke bhi kya fayada, log akhir mein pakkad hi lenge). In the end, it just adds up to one thing, please… please… puhleeese… don’t knock on his door while he is asleep, or you are history! Mark my words, no one messes with this guy when he is asleep, not even Jai Pratap Singh™.

Netaji™, as he is fondly called by his endless number of friends is a person who is very jovial and easy going by nature. He never takes life hard, but considers every problem as a personal challenge. Ambitious, determined, bold, vivacious, spirited, effervescent, astonishing, astounding, amazing, stunning, marvelous, terrific; this person has shown enormous courage in bitter and hard times. A born diplomat, this person has the qualities to turn the tables on anyone. Svelte and lean, athletic and nimble, his ideal way to deal with things and people is through retribution and reprisal and he expertises in ‘changing the tide of times’, ‘generating public opinion’ or generating enough amount of ill will and antagonism in the minds of brutes like Jai Pratap (oops! Sorry!), to beat the shit outta their arses. No sweat, no hard feelings my dear boy. And that is why he is fondly called Netaji™ by his close group of friends. In the end, this guy bears no enmity and ill will in his mind, and people are prone to become his good friends, even after he had their arses stuffed up.

Justice Tidda™ the Rock, the base on which the HLG stands. He is everything the members of the HLG secretly wish to be. Smart, intelligent, brave, out-spoken and sometimes a little bit queasy and dubious with his shadowy and mysterious thoughts. Stay clear of this guy, or you are looking for trouble. A good friend and aide when you have huge tapeworms in your arse. Loves to put his hand out there with an inexplicable panache, even when you don’t have a tapeworm in your arse. So, my advice to you dear is to stay clear.

Alexander™ with his melancholy behaviour is one of the favorites in the HLG Indians who has the best chances to do you-know-what now. Everyone is counting on him. This guy is talented, and when I say talented, I mean in every kind of way. He is an expert, in everything. Music, sports, studies, moots, you name it; and he is one of the few, or maybe he is the only one, who can perfectly imitate Mahensa’s confounding accent and make people laugh in the end. Self-defeating and destructive sometimes, this person can get into bouts of depression and is hard to convince sometimes. A little unlucky in life, if I might add. (Cheer up buddy, you are not alone).

Kaka™, my personal favorite. You can say he is the second-most intelligent person around in the college. No one is better than him, except perhaps me. Ok, I will stop being modest around here now, he doesn’t come anywhere near my feats, but he ain’t bad either. Kaka™ is known for his wise-cracks and jests on whatever the hell happens at our college. Anything that happens, according to him, is incomplete without his annotations. We sure exalt your precious commentary, Kaka™. And for jazzing up his profile, you guys would sure like to know who is the person, after all this time, who nicknamed this great personality? It was me. I bet Kaka™ isn’t going to like this. Guys it’s related to the Kaka Kelkar Committee discussion that was going on in the class. Send me your wild ideas.

Bippin™ is considered to be one of the most gentle guys in the college (but, no competition for you Jai, you are the undisputable champ!). This is one guy who has all his sets of priorities right. No ego problems, no attitude, just a plain and simple guy who’s plain simple proud for what he is. He with his second-to-none attitude is nothing less than an idol for most of us. (By the way, you and your girlfriend really look very cute together!)

Mitha™ is not a member of HLG as of now. He lost his membership early. Easily one of the most handsome guys around in the university, the sole reason that he was debarred from future meetings of the HLG™ was that he stayed in the company of girls too long, and that is a serious violation of the code of conduct of the HLG™. No one, yes, no one can stay in the company of girls too long. Anyway, his contribution to the rise of HLG™ cannot be undermined, for he was the one (apart from Jai Pratap™) who added serious glamour to the group.

These are the guys who made up most of HLG™, and their company and friendship would set ideals for our juniors to look upon and follow.

Bharat Mata ki Jai…
Bolo… Hum sab ek hain...
