Water Conservation in the Summer

Summer is a time for cooling off in the water, but it’s also the start of peak season for water consumption – primarily for landscape irrigation. With just a few simple steps, you can conserve a good Amount of water this Summer and save money.

Water early

The best times of day to water your yard are early in the morning or as it cools down at night. This method will help water from being evaporated during midday. Another tip to remember is to avoid watering on a windy day.

Adjust your sprinkler settings

If you have an automatic irrigation system, adjust your controller before summer. Try to limit the amount of times your sprinkler goes off in a day. Keep in mind that depending on where you live there may be water restrictions in your neighborhood for when you can water and how much.

Collect rain water

Another way to conserve water over summer is to recycle water by collecting rain runoff. Have some handy buckets or barrels ready to collect a large volume of water for irrigation.

Check leaks

Regularly walk around your house for any drips or leaks in your hoses, washers, faucets and toilets.

Sweep debris

Using a broom instead of using a hose to clean sidewalks or decks will conserve water.

Water your lawn less

Try to water only when your lawn truly needs it. Just be conservative on the amount of water you use.

Take shorter showers

Try to get into the habit of taking Shorter Showers instead of baths. Did you know that a full bathtub can take 70 gallons and a five-minute shower can be between 10-25 gallons?

Less loads for dishwasher/washing machine

Get in the habit of running the dishwasher and washing machine only when they are full. This will help reduce the amount of water you consume.

Pool maintenance

Find and repair leaks in the pool. Clean the filter. Vacuum the pool. Check pH levels.

Brush your teeth with less water

Try to get in the habit of turning off tap water while you brush your teeth in the morning and night.
