How to make your home more green (and clean)

With more natural and less chemically based products on the market nowadays, it has become even more popular to think green when Cleaning our homes. There are many additional steps that can be taken to be kinder on your surroundings, that will have a positive effect on your own health and wellbeing. Follow our tips for advice on how to be more eco-friendly in your everyday and spring cleaning routines, and how to make your home more green!

Natural products

In recent years several great eco-cleaning brands have popped up that can do the job as well as your traditional heavy duty chemical products, while being better for you and your environment. Ecover and Method are two brands that have a wide range of products, from laundry detergent to dishwashing liquid available in supermarkets and drugstores, but there are many more brands out there for you to choose from. And don’t forget to make your own products out of simple household goods such as vinegar, lemons, and coffee, which can be combined and used for furniture polish, window cleaning, and deep cleaning solutions.

Save water

One of the easiest ways we can look after our environment but one that is often forgotten is to conserve water while we clean. Make sure your dishwasher is completely full before running a cycle, similarly with your washing machine, and only use the highest heat settings when necessary. While deep cleaning try and refill buckets of water as little as possible, and leave things to soak first – this is also gentler on the hands and generally more effective. Check any faulty leaks that may be wasting water when doing DIY jobs – this can be one of the worst culprits for the environment and your water bill!

Fresh air and plants

Start your own green ecosystem within your house – filling your house with plants will make for a healthier and greener atmosphere, as will keeping fresh air flowing throughout the day. Open the curtains in the morning to let the sunlight in, and close them at night to conserve the heat. Even when it’s a little chilly out make sure to open windows briefly to keep things fresh, healthy, and heat your home more efficiently.

Less waste

Keep an eye on how much you’re chucking away – and what it is that you’re wasting. Paper towels can be switched for tea towels and cleaning cloths, that can be laundered in order to reduce our environmental footprint at home. And while it is important to replace sponges and wipes regularly for hygiene purposes, try and prolong their lifespan and avoid waste by following our tips on how to clean your cleaning tools.

Reuse household items

Before you throw away that old T-shirt consider that it was always great at picking up stains – why not use it for that after you’re done with it instead of countless paper towels? As with household products, there are many items lying around your home that can be used in place of expensive and often unnecessary tools, such as newspapers to clean windows to old clothes and pillowcases as rags. And don’t forget to recycle clutter that you don’t need anymore by giving it to charity, online furniture and item recycling communities, or your new cleaning tool collection!

Check your Heating system

One of the biggest pitfalls in a household that dreams of being greener is inefficient heating systems. Make sure your house is properly insulated first, and arrange to have your heating and cooling ducts checked before the winter, to make your heating is less of a waste and more cost-effective. With most modern heating systems you can use temperature Apps on your smartphone to detect the temperature in your house, and know when you feel the most comfortable, or when it is too hot. Don’t forget to keep doors and windows closed for the periods the heating is on, and move furniture and clothes away from radiators to let heat flow properly.
