Door Overlays

The measurements will reflect the inner edges of the cabinet. For kitchen cabinet doors that extend beyond the opening, a door overlay should be added to the calculation. Most doors require an addition of 1inch to the height and width of the measurement taken, this will allow for a ½inch overlay.

Split Doors

Split door kitchen cabinet have two doors for each cabinet opening. Split doors are recommended for cabinet openings that are wider than 22inches. Split doors also require an addition of 1inch to the height and width measurement to allow for a ½ inch overlay. Divide the width by 2 and subtract ½ inches. The results will be a 1/8 inch gap between the split doors. For example, an initial measurement of 35”x 20” will be 35”+1”=36”

Divide 36” by 2 for the doors =18”, Subtract 1/16 to get the gap: 18-(1/16)=

Final measurement: 17 (15/16”) x 21.

Inset Doors

Inset cabinet doors are doors that fit directly inside the frame of the kitchen cabinet. Measure the openings from edge to edge and remove 1/4 inches each from the height and the width measurements. This will ensure that the kitchen cabinet doors fit in properly.

Split Inset Doors

The measurements for split inset doors are the same for inset doors. Using the steps illustrated above, divide the width by 2 and then subtract 1/16inch.

Butt Joint Doors

Butt joint doors are doors that create a 900 angle when they interest. This require that one door is slightly longer than the other. For the left side, add 1inch to the measurement of the height and ½ inch to that of the width. For the right side, add 1inch to the height, ½ inch to the width and then subtract the thickness of the door from the final width measurement.

General rules

Measure in millimetres

Measure heights first and then width

Take note of left-handed and right-handed doors.

Measure and take notes twice; precision is very important

Measure the kitchen cabinet doors, not the cabinet themselves

Kitchen cabinet doors are narrower than the frame, so give about 4mm allowance for width and 5mm for height

With the right measurements, you are a step closer to getting the perfect kitchen cabinet doors / kitchen doors that will fit into your ideal kitchen
