Pros and Cons of Living with Someone Who is Your Opposite

Your perfect Roommate is leaving at the end of the month and you must restart the grueling search of finding a new one. Whether you're loyal to Craigslist or go the app route for matching with strangers in need of housing, finding the right person to fit well with your personality can be difficult.

Sometimes, you may have to go with someone who's your complete Opposite. If you're currently in this bind and can't live alone, here are a few pros and cons of Living with someone who is your opposite before you make a decision.

Artists, musicians and writers come with an open mind and buckets of creativity that often spills into their living space. While they may be somewhat messy, they can also help decorate common areas and bring great elements like paintings, textiles and more to brighten up the place.

You could also gain access to their creative friends circle to make more fun acquaintances. But make sure to see eye-to-eye on important dates and deadlines as creative roommates may get too focused on their projects and forget.

Con: Irresponsible slacker

If you're an extremely organized person and you find someone who's a little more relaxed about their responsibilities, it may be a match made in hell for your small apartment.

You may have a hard time keeping up with chores, financials and maintenance around the household. Ask up front about their job status and create a roommate agreement on how to manage bills and chores before moving in.

Pro: Learn new things

Are you someone who works all the time and have no time to cook beyond a box of Kraft Mac 'n cheese? Someone who has a more flexible schedule with culinary skills may take care of dinnertime and even teach us a skill or two.

Their more relaxed personality to your workaholic may be a great match as one party takes care of the kitchen while you keep track of apartment maintenance. Just keep an eye out for an increasing grocery budget — those specialty ingredients can get costly.

Con: Party central

Your quiet introvert meets the quintessential party animal — opposites don't always attract. The last thing you need is being kept awake on a work night at 2 a.m. and then waking up for work at dawn with a few drunk people sleeping in your living room.

Before you accidentally jump into a living arrangement with a partier, be sure to ask them about their social life, alcohol or drug consumption and how they like to spend their downtime.

Pro: Built-in friend

If you're new to the city, having a laid-back roommate to show you around may be a good idea — as long as that's agreed upon during the interview. If you're a part-time extrovert and need someone to give you an extra push, a more outgoing roommate may be a good idea.

Before saying yes to the pairing, check up on their social media to see if you're on the same page about the idea of a good time.

Con: Too perfect may be too perfect

You may think you're clean and responsible by your personal standards, but if you find a roommate that's too much of perfectionist, their high expectations may be a recipe for disaster.

Passive aggressive behaviors may escalate as they go behind you to re-clean common areas or try to take control of things so they can do it their way. While having someone who loves cleaning may sound appealing, remember to ask about their daily habits and reactions to specific incidents to clarify expectations before you sign a lease.
