7 Garden Design Ideas That Showcase Your Home’s Natural Beauty

If you’re busy getting your Garden and landscape ready for spring, but aren’t sure yet how you can improve the look and feel of your property, don’t fret yet.  Here are several garden design ideas that if you implement them can help to make your landscape look the best that it ever has.  Not every tip will work on every property, but if you use these to get started thinking, taking the ones that work the best and discarding the others, you’ll be well on your way to designing an amazing garden you can enjoy at all points of the year.

1.    Give Your Deck or Patio Enough Room

Odds are a significant portion of the time that you spend outside is going to be spent on your deck or patio.  Because of this, you need to make sure that you have enough space dedicated to the area and you don’t overcrowd it!  While odds are that you won’t be able to increase the size of your patio or deck easily, make sure you’re not overloading the area with things such as cast aluminum patio furniture.

Try to keep at least a three-foot circle of space open around any deck, chairs, or tables to allow people to walk around and comfortably get up and sit down.  This will create a more open feeling and let any guests you have to mingle more easily.

2.    Don’t Forget About Lighting

When it comes to garden designs and ideas, the type of garden light fixtures that you choose is just as important as the plants that you choose. Adding lighting to your landscape accents it at night and can even make it slightly safer as you can see more easily where you’re going in the dark!  Besides, why should your enjoyment of your landscape end when the sun goes down?  For some of the best lighting that you can use, make sure you get lights from a quality manufacturer like Malibu garden lights.

3.    Add Tiny Accents

When you’re thinking of garden design plans, no matter how small it is, don’t forget about adding tiny accents like a solar bird bath, archways, or even small water features.  They can really add to the atmosphere and look of your garden.  However, this can be a double-edged sword.  Make sure that you don’t try to crowd in too many objects, it can make your garden simply look tacky.  Instead, pick one or two things you like and showcase them.

4.    Make Sure Your Garden Looks Attractive Year Round

Almost everyone’s garden looks attractive during the spring and summer months when plants are blooming and in looking their best.  But what does your garden look like during the winter months?  Is it dead and dry?  Try to incorporate a few evergreens or plants that still look attractive even when the sun’s gone into hiding for most of the day.  It might help to lift your winter blues!

5.    Give Your Plants Room to Grow

When you’re initially planting your plants, remember that they will grow out as well as up, so make sure you give them enough room to grow so your plants won’t look jammed together when they reach maturity.

One important point here is to make sure that you plant any especially big plants like trees and shrubs, as well as thorny plants a fair distance away from areas where people will be walking or using.  While a rose bush may look beautiful next to your patio if you keep getting stuck in the thorns you might find yourself tearing it out!

6.    Give Your Plants Multiple Purposes

Another great garden design idea is to choose and plant the plants you use so that they have multiple uses.  Plant large trees around decks or patios to give some shade from the sun and some shelter from a light rain.  Tall trees and shrubs can also be used as privacy screens to keep your neighbor’s prying eyes out of your house and yard.  And you can even use some plants as windbreaks or for other purposes.  Plants that look good and that are functional as well will greatly add to your garden.

7.    Use the Right Pavers

Finally, while you’re thinking of landscape design ideas, don’t forget about the pavers that you’re using to make the paths and steps around your property.  Make sure that they won’t wobble when you install them and when they get wet they won’t be slick.  Smooth paver stones can present a hazard for you or anyone else walking around your property after even a brief rainstorm.

Landscape garden design might involve a lot of choices and creativity, but putting together an amazing garden is more than worth the payoff.  Use some of these garden design ideas to improve your garden starting today.
