Twelve inch Wooden Spoon.
This is a combination scroll saw and Carving project. You will do all the rough cutting with the scroll saw then complete the spoon with a Spoon Carving Knife and sanding.
While I was at the Ohio Scroll Saw Expo this weekend I met Dick Belcher. He was there selling his incredible collection of carving tools. Dick has been carving since childhood and is a wealth of information. He also teaches carving classes in the southern Ohio area. I had the pleasure of spending time talking with dick.

One is a push knife and the other is a pull knife.

This is the back of the wooden spoon I carved.
This is the spoon carving knife I used for this project. Notice the hooked blade.
The wood I used is 1 inch thick. You could probably get away with a 3/4" thick board but the bowl of the spoon will be more shallow. I cut the outline of the spoon. You may notice that I had my name on the pattern. I decided to leave that out for this first spoon. I name can easily be added to make the spoon custom.
After I cut the outline of the spoon I manually drew the profile with a pencil. I left the handle about 3/8" thick. I stopped the drawing at the bowl. Notice the transition from the handle to the bowl is gradual.
Lay the spoon blank on its edge and cut the profile of the handle. I did not cut the bowl profile with the scroll saw.

Before I removed the pattern I stippled the bowl pattern with an awe.
I used a combination of carving with the spoon knife and sanding until I got the bowl shape I wanted. A drum sander is a big help with the bottom of the bowl.
I really enjoyed this project. Carving just adds another skill to our crafting knowledge. This wooden spoon was an easy carving project to start out with. It took me about two hours from start to finish. The spoon carving knife made the project possible. It works great. I have tried carving spoon bowls in the past with gouges and was not successful. This tool made it easy.
I finished the spoon with an oil finish.
A very welcome surprise:
While I was attending the Ohio Scroll Saw Expo I had a big surprise. Markus Zaugg, the director of marketing for SCIES Miniatures stopped by to say hello. SCIES Miniatures is the Swedish company that manufactures Pegas scroll saw blades. Markus was in the US for business and took the time to drive to Cuyahoga Falls Ohio during the Expo to meet me.
This was a great opportunity for me to talk scroll saw blades with someone from one of the leading manufactures of blades in the world. When it comes to blade technology these guys know their stuff.
Markus also brought along some additions to their New Pegus blade chuck heads. He had a version dedicated to the DeWalt and Jet saw. I was not able to get a demo sample but I will get my hands on them soon. You can see my review of the original check heads here.
We also talked about a blade upgrade that is coming soon. They will be adding a top notch to their reverse tooth line of blades. This is a feature that I had requested several months ago and I was thrilled to see that it's on the way. The top-notch makes it easy to know which end of the blade goes in the top chuck. This is great news for those of us who sometimes struggle to feel which way the teeth are pointing(Especially on small blades). The release date for this feature is still up in the air but they are coming.
