Hawthorn tincture

I’ve written about Hawthorn previously and mentioned Hawthorn Tincture, so I thought I’d write a short post explaining how to make your own.  A tincture is an alcohol based herbal remedy; we tend to use unbranded 40% vodka to make our tinctures.

Hawthorn has been shown to have a beneficial effect in the treatment of chronic heart failure.

  • Collect enough of the hawthorn leaves and flowers to fill your jar.
  • Pack them into the jar and top up with the alcohol.  It’s really important to make sure that no leaves or flowers are above the surface of the liquid as they can turn rancid and spoil the whole tincture.

  • Seal the lid and put the jar in a dark cupboard for 6 weeks.
  • Strain the liquid through a jelly bag and bottle.

  • Take a couple of teaspoons a day, although clearly not before driving or using machinery, tools etc.

We make tinctures and lots of other herbal remedies on our 1 Day Herbal Remedies course.  You can see photos from this course, as well as all of our other courses, on our Facebook page.
