Yesterday I showed you how to cut the pieces for your Roll & Go sewing organizer using fat quarters from Banyan Batiks African Violets collection. Now you’re ready to start sewing!
Outside Panel
- Sew the 20″ outside panel pieces together. Press seams open.
- Layer muslin, batting and outside fabric (right side up). Pin or baste together.
- Quilt through all layers as desired.
- Center ribbon trim along the seam lines. Sew in place.
- Trim the quilted panel to measure 9½” x 19½”.
Pocket 1
With right sides together, sew the 2 – 7½” squares together with a ¼” seam. Leave a 2″ opening on one side for turning. Trim a little off the corners to make turning easier.
Center the 7″ square of iron-on interfacing on one side of the square. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using the interfacing. Press.
- Turn the pocket right side out. Press. Hand-stitch the opening closed.
- Top-stitch ⅜” from the edge. Sew “loop” (soft) part of the Velcro to the right side of the pocket near the edge.
- Sew the “hook” part of the Velcro to the inside of pocket 1, aligning it with the “loop” parts.
- Fold up the bottom of the fabric to make a pocket that is 2½” deep. Pin or baste in place.
Pocket 2
- Center the 3½” x 4½” piece of iron-on interfacing on the wrong side of the 4″ x 5″ rectangle. Press.
- Fold the rectangle in half, right sides together, to make a 2½” x 4″ rectangle.
- Stitch on the two short sides. Turn right side out. Press.
- Top-stitch ⅜” from the outside folded edges.
Pincushion
- Fold the pin cushion fabric in half, right sides together, to make a rectangle 2¼” x 5½”.
- Stitch along one short side and the open long side. Back-stitch at the beginning and end to secure.
- Turn right side out.
- Stuff with quilt batting.
- Turn under the ¼” seam allowance on the open end and hand-stitch closed.
Elastic for the Thread Holder
-
Use a fabric marking tool to draw a line on the inside Panel, 11″ down from the top.
-
Mark the line at the intervals shown below.
- Mark the 16″ piece of elastic at the intervals shown below.
- Machine-stitch the elastic in place on the 11″ line, matching the drawn lines on the elastic with those on the inside panel. You’ll be forming 5 loops to hold spools of thread.
- Stitch the two loose ends of the elastic to the edges of the panel using a ⅛” seam allowance.
- Cut off excess elastic from the outside edges.
Come back tomorrow and I’ll show you how to put all the Banyan Batiks African Violets pieces together to finish your Roll & Go sewing organizer.
This is part 2 of 5 in this series.
