My BONSAI: This happens to be one of my hobbies my wife actually enjoys. It brings natural beauty to our yard. I've put a lot of time and money into my trees, but i guess that goes hand and hand with any hobby. This obsession of mine came about two years ago. I was called into my neighbors yard by my wife as she noticed these small, but powerful looking minature trees. It was from that moment on I was hooked. I spent countless hours on the internet researching bonsai. I purchased numerous books on bonsai, learning about different species, maintaining, pruning, watering, and winterizing. This is a very challenging hobby, with many of the trees needing special requirements. All bonsai need bonsai soil, which is a type of soil that allows fast draining of water. When water sits to long in a pot the results could be devastating causing root rot which could eventually kill your Tree. They also need to be watered a certain time of the day, either early morning or early evening depending on your climate and the time of year. Watering midday in the hot sun on leaves will cause leaf scorch, giving the trees an ugly appearance. All my trees are treated with special fertilizers every other week during growing season. This will promote healthy growth, which in turn will require pruning. No bonsai is ever finished. It is constantly growing and changing in size and shape. To me, when a bonsai is finished it's no longer with us.
So, now I had all these beautiful trees but nowhere to put them. I decided to build some bonsai stands which you can see in the pictures. I enjoy working with wood, so I found it quite relaxing. It took me around two days to complete with stain.
Enjoy the pictures, and feel free to comment or ask questions.

It's a frigid Sunday here on Long Island, NY., but there's plenty of sunshine. Have to check on my bonsai today. I put them in my back shed with a big window. It stays around 10 degrees warmer, plus protects the trees from the cold winds. They need very little water in the winter, and very little care, but nevertheless, i like to check on them once a week anyway.
