7 Tips When Working With Decorative Trim

Fringe is a decorative Trim edging made of packed yarns that hang from a band (imagine the 1920′s flapper dresses)

Cord is a round, twisted strand of roped fibers with unique textures. It comes lipped and non-lipped.

Braid is a flat home decor trim with two finished edges and a braided design throughout.

Each offers its own special touch to not only windows and home furnishings, but to just about anything it touches

Decorator trim manufactures like DecoPro offer a vast selection of each that are a lot of fun to work with and add a richness and value to your home decor projects. From table and window dressings to pillows, bedding and home furnishing accents, the range of sizes, colors and designs offered through fringe, cords, and braids create the kind of accents that are truly transforming.

When working with decorative trims, here are a few sewing guidelines to keep in mind.

Trim Application Tips

  • Use a size 14/90 to 16/100 Universal Point or Sharp needle in your sewing machine. Home decor fabrics can get very thick under the presser foot and will need a sharp, strong needle.

  • Use a little longer stitch length than for garment projects. Instead of 2-3mm, adjust to 3-3.5mm). The longer stitch length makes sewing the extra thicknesses created by the fabric and trim a lot easier.

  • Prevent needle breakage by sewing slowly over thick areas

  • Start sewing the trim at the center of any side of a pillow or cushion unless the project instructions specifically say to do otherwise.

  • Fabric and trim MUST BE OF EQUAL LENGTHS. If you pull or stretch the trim to fit an edge, the edge puckers and no amount of pressing can straighten it out. (Note: this applies to garment stitching as well)

  • When making pillows and slipcovers or covering cushions, sew the trim to the top pillow piece first. Sew the back pillow piece to the trimmed front fabric piece afterward. This way if you get any stitch distortion, it shows on the back rather than the front of the project.

  • When cutting your decorative trim, place a piece of scotch or masking tape at the incision mark, then cut in the middle of it. This prevents fraying or unraveling of trim.
