How to Make a Flat Single Crochet Circle

The single Crochet is one of the first stitches that we all learn as beginners. It is one of the most basic and commonly used stitch. But have you noticed that when you are crocheting in the round in single crochet you wind up with a hexagon instead of a circle? When it comes to crocheting in the round, not all projects will lie flat. But learning to crochet a flat circle is really useful if you want to make circular projects...bags.....hats....ornaments....table mats and many more!!!!!

In this post, I am sharing a very small trick to have the perfect Flat Single Crochet Circle.

Materials Used:-
  • Yarn
  • Crochet Hook
  • Stitch Marker

Now, the first rule to crochet is to have a track of the stitches. So, it is always good to be sure you are going on the right track by counting your stitches at end of each round.

The commonly followed formula is that each round should increase by the same number of stitches you started with.

The basic thumb rule for the starting stitch is:-
  • Any Double Crochet (DC) circle begins with 12 stitches.
  • Any Half Double Crochet (HDC) circle begins with 8 stitches.
  • Any Single Crochet (SC) circle begins with 6 stitches.

For example if you start your round with 6 stitches, then the increasing number of stitches will be as below:-

Round 1 - 6 Stitches
Round 2 - 12 Stitches(+6)
Round 3 - 18 Stitches(+6)
Round 4 - 24 Stitches(+6)
Round 5 - 30 Stitches(+6)
Round 6 - 36 Stitches(+6)
Round 7 - 42 Stitches(+6)
.....and so on....

And the pattern for increasing the stitches will be in a uniform way as below:-

Round 1--Start with a magic ring, make 6 SC(Single Crochet) (6)
Round 2--2SC in each stitch around (12)
Round 3--(1 SC ,SC increase in the next stitch) (that is 2SC in one stitch)(18)
Round 4--(1 SC,1 SC,SC increase in next stitch)(24)
Round 5--(1 SC ,1 SC,1 SC, SC increase in next stitch)(30)
Round 6--(1SC,1 SC,1 SC,1 SC , SC increase in next stitch)(36)
 .....and so on.

This regularly followed formula works like a charm with Double Crochet and Half Double crochet.

I have already shared a post on How to make Seamless Crochet Circle. Do check it out.

But when you follow this with single crochet, you end up with a Hexagon like this instead of a circle.

Here, lets see a small tweak in the formula and you can make a perfectly round single crochet circle.

Let me show you the step by step tutorial.

Start with a Magic Circle.

6 Single Crochet in the loop. Pull the yarn tail and close the gap in the middle.

You may choose to join rounds or work in a continuous rounds as it makes no difference to the formula.

I am working in continuous rounds.

2 Single Crochet in each stitch around.

Use a stitch marker to mark the start of each round. I love using locking stitch markers.

1 Single Crochet , 2 Single Crochet in the next stitch.
Repeat (1SC, 2SC) all around.
You should have 18 stitches at the end.

Till here it is the usually followed formula.

From this round on wards , we will make a small alteration in the increase pattern.

Normally we would continue with (1SC ,1SC, 2SC in next stitch)(24).

Here is the tweak in the pattern.

Start with 1 SC,Increase,1 SC in next 2 stitches,increase.

Repeat(1SC,1SC,Inc) all around.1 SC in the last stitch.

You should have 24 stitches at the end.

1 SC in 3 Stitches,increase.

Repeat(1SC,1SC,1SC,Inc) all around

You should have 30 stitches at the end.

Start with 1 SC in 2 stitches,Increase,1 SC in 4 stitches,increase.

Repeat(1SC,1SC,1SC,1SC,Inc) all around.1 SC each in the last 2 remaining stitches.

You should have 36 stitches at the end.

1 SC in 5 stitches,Increase

Repeat(1SC,1SC,1SC,1SC,1SC,Inc) all around

You should have 42 stitches at the end.

1 Single Crochet in 3 stitches ,Increase,1 SC in next 6 stitches,increase.

Repeat(1SC,1SC,1SC,1SC,1SC,1SC,Inc) all around.1 SC each in the remaining last 3 Stitches.

You should have 48 stitches at the end.

1 SC in 7 Stitches,Increase

Repeat(1SC,1SC,1SC,1SC,1SC,1SC,1SC,Inc) all around

You should have 54 stitches at the end.

There you go!!!!

Can you see the Difference????

Doesn't it look better than the hexagon shape!!!!!!

Follow this method and get crafty with your coasters....bags...rugs !!!!!!!!

I hope you find this helpful!!!!Do give it a try for your next project.
