USD Appoints New Director of its Supply Chain Management Institute

The Supply Chain Management Institute (SCMI) in the University of San Diego School of Business has appointed Mary Long as Managing Director. Long succeeds Joel Sutherland—appointed leader of the SCMI in 2011—and is the former Vice President of Logistics and Network Planning at Domino’s Pizza.

The SCMI was created in 1999 to support the development of Supply Chain professionals. It does this by hosting research-led workshops and providing students and working professionals with the latest industry knowledge. The SCMI also offers several annual events where professionals can gain new skills and strategies to help their organization’s supply chain “reach new levels of efficiency.”

To the position of Managing Director, Long brings her expertise in logistics, supply chain strategy and systems, engineering, manufacturing, global equipment and supply, customer collaboration and operations. She is also the current incoming chair for the Council of Supply Chain Management Board of Directors and serves on the advisory board for AWESOME (Achieving Women’s Excellence in Supply Chain, Operations, Management and Education).

As for her experience, Long has an MBA in Operations and Logistics from Ohio State University, and she earned her undergraduate degree in Quantitative Business Analysis from Cleveland State University. And, over the last 15 years, her career in supply chain management has seen her in a variety of roles at such prestigious companies as Campbell Soup, General Mills, Pillsbury, and Quaker Oats/Gatorade.

So, there’s no doubt that Long will be well suited to her role as Managing Director of the SCMI, even if she does have big shoes to fill.

“Joel’s vision and dedication have greatly energized the Supply Chain Management Institute and the University of San Diego’s prominence in this area,” Jaime Alonso Gómez, Dean of the School of Business, said in a press release. “His contributions have inspired many students and alumni, and we are grateful for the many new initiatives and connections he established during his tenure. We are confident that Mary will continue this great work. Her performance, knowledge and talent will be an asset to the SCMI and to the School of Business as a whole.”
