The new private education institution on the block: say hi to NAA!

Hey guys, for those who’ve yet to hear… there’s a new nursing degree on the block! More on that later, after we reveal the school behind this endeavour (psst, they start with an ‘N’, too!).

It’s Ngee Ann Academy, which officially opened earlier this month (August)!  For those who’re thinking that the name sounds kind of familiar, that’s because the school (back when it had a partnership with Adelaide University) was formerly known as the Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre.

Digital Senior was invited to the opening ceremony, where we got a glimpse of the institution’s new campus, heard about its upcoming plans (exciting ones), and drank awesome white wine. Here’s what we discovered.

 Loading in progress…

Exciting offerings

Remember the nursing degree we mentioned? It’s the Bachelor of Science in Nursing with Honours (Post-reg), offered by King’s College London*!

Fully taught by faculty from King’s College London (KCL) from the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care and approved by the Singapore Nursing Board, this is the first KCL degree course to be fully taught outside of the UK. It is also the first in Singapore to offer electives in Older Persons’ Care and Palliative Care.

KCL is ranked 5th in the world and 2nd in Europe for Nursing (2018 QS World University Rankings), so students undertaking this course can expect to receive quality education!

On this partnership, Chief Executive Officer and Dean of Ngee Ann Academy, Dr. Susie Khoo, has mentioned that Ngee Ann Academy “…looks forward to the possibility of working with more hospitals and healthcare institutions. These collaborations aim to provide our nurses with more opportunities and access to high quality education and training”.

We’re thinking attachment placements, maybe?

Ngee Ann Academy is also exploring programmes offered by SOAS University of London (famous alumni include State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi), having formalised a partnership recently.

SOAS University of London is well known for strength in the humanities—especially in the study of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East—so could programmes involving this be what’s in store? We don’t know yet as more details will be released at a later timing, so watch this space for updates!

Campus tour

We did a brief tour of Ngee Ann Academy’s campus for you, so here’s what we found if you’re curious!

The lounge. (Photo credits: Ngee Ann Academy)

Ngee Ann Academy’s campus occupies the twenty-fifth floor and, when one first steps in, has a ‘cozy’ feel to it. Orange and blue grace the walls, brightening up the space with a cheerful pop of colour. There’s a small lounge area in the corner, where you can rest your feet at before classes begin. It’s not hard to feel at home here.

How a lecture room looks. Brightly lit.

In one of the lecture rooms, we found interactive whiteboards! With these, students can interact and collaborate with lecture content in-real time, or make their presentations interactive. Lecturers can also do things such as highlighting key information as they teach, which we think will make learning more engaging, for sure.

While new, the Ngee Ann City campus is actually a brief home to the institute. It will return to the Teochew Building once renovations are complete, so you can expect even better facilities when then happens!

Bettering lives through education

If you’re in need of financial help and really want to study with Ngee Ann Academy, there are funding opportunities available.

During the Opening Ceremony, scholarships were handed out to 5 nursing students worth a total of $70,000. These scholarships are given out by Ngee Ann Education Holdings (which Ngee Ann Academy is a fully-owned subsidiary of) and will be available to outstanding students! The Ngee Ann Education Holdings Scholarship will cover 50% of the total tuition fee.

Those in the nursing degree have the Community Care Manpower Development Award, which covers up to 90% of course fees and other relevant costs, open to them. We understand that more funding assistance is in the pipeline.

More details for both can be found here.

With all we’ve learnt we wish Ngee Ann Academy and its students all the best moving forward, and look forward to what’s in store!

*Details of the degree are as follows:

  • Single-honours
  • Part-time
  • $28,000 (pre GST)
