5 Ways to Stay Healthy During The Long Weekend

5 Ways To Stay Healthy During The Long Weekend

We are on the cusp of another long weekend that is expected to be hot and humid. The city of Toronto will be electric with Caribana, RibFest, the Veld Festival and other spectacular events. If you’re like most people then you may be inclined to stray from the healthy and active lifestyle for a few days while you enjoy this much needed time off with the family. We totally understand because let’s face it, who doesn’t like a few patio beers overlooking the lake at the cottage during a long weekend. As health and fitness enthusiasts, we always promote a healthier lifestyle which is why today, we give you five tips to staying healthy during the long weekend.

Go For A Walk

If you find yourself at the cottage during this Civic holiday then perhaps you could go for a long walk in the town. The cottage offers a place of reprieve from the everyday commotion that takes place in the city and in your daily routines. A nice relaxing walk in a countryside town is an ideal activity for those looking to reduce stress and enter a peaceful state. A walk along the lake or in town is beneficial not only to your fitness but to your mental health as well.

Opt For Healthier Drinks

Like we mentioned earlier, you may be inclined to indulge in a few alcoholic beverages during the Civic Holiday. You should note that there are healthy alternatives to some of your favourite drinks. A standard pint of beer is approximately 250 calories, however, a vodka and soda will only cost you 86 calories. While all of these drinks are considered “empty” calories, opt for lighter beers or mixed drinks with soda water and you will be fine. As always, enjoy responsibly and always remember that moderation is key to a healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Go For A Swim

It will be incredibly hot this weekend, therefore, you should consider visiting the Toronto beaches, a lake, or one of the many pools in the city that have allocated drop-in programs. Swimming is an incredibly fun activity that will also give you a solid workout. Take the family out for a picnic and enjoy the water because as we all know, these warm temperatures do not last forever.

Take The Healthier Alternatives

A lot of people like to go on road trips during these long weekends which often means finding yourself eating at rest stops or places where the only option is fast food. Fast food can be healthy. For example, if you order a chicken salad without dressing at any of the standard fast food restaurants then you’re having a healthy meal. Always remember, grilled is better than crispy and instead of a large coke, have a bottle of water instead.

Modify Your Workouts

It’s understandable if you do not want to go for your daily 5K run during this weekend because we all need a break once in awhile. However, modified workouts will keep you healthy and happy. If you cannot visit the gym this weekend, try several dynamic stretching routines that can be found online. Add in a few isometric exercises and you have yourself an efficient and effective modified workout that could be done virtually anywhere.
