4 Tips on how to conceive a boy

1. You should have sex in positions that allow for deep penetration

Believe it or not, but there are some things which boost your chances of having a boy (Image: iStockphoto)
Dr Shettles, author of, How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby , believed that there were key difference between the different types of sperm.

There are the ones which carry the X chromosome (girl sperm), and one which carry the Y chromosome (boy sperm).

Boy sperm is characteristically weaker, smaller and faster than female sperm, which is overall tougher and better at survival (read into that what you will).

What Dr Shettles therefore believed, is that boy sperm benefits from a little head start - which more penetrative sex positions could help.

This would mean the boy sperm had less distance to travel and could therefore out-swim the girl sperm.

Suggested positions include you straddling your male partner, or having sex standing up.

2. Have intercourse as close to ovulation as possible

Timing is everything - including when trying to conceive.

The good news is, if you're already trying for a baby, you're probably already timing it around the days close to ovulation, as well as the day you ovulate itself.

Dr Shettle recommends having sex as close to ovulation as possible again because of the speed difference with sperm.

The male sperm can get to the patiently-waiting egg faster than the girl sperm.

If you have sex a few days before you ovulate, however, this gives the less resilient boy sperm time to die off.

3. Your partner should wear boxer shorts

The reason being, a man's choice of underwear could have an adverse effect on his sperm production. At least according to this old wife's tale.

So, it's believed male sperm thrives more if a man wears boxers, as this means the scrotum doesn't get overly warm.

Male sperm, it seems, can't take the heat and so wearing tight pants allows it a better chance of survival.

Female sperm, with its superior survival skills, is better suited to a "tight underwear" environment.

However, be aware that an overheated scrotum isn't exactly good news for any sperm, be it male or female.

4. Orgasming before your partner

during sex may increase your chances too

Apparently, whether a woman orgasms or not can have a bearing on the sex of a baby and could play a vital role in determining whether you conceive a boy.

The theory is when a woman orgasms, there is an alkaline-based secretion which is released into the vagina, and which boosts the survival chances of that boy sperm.

For this reason, you may also want to adapt to a more alkaline-based diet when trying to.
