Do I Need To Worry About My PCOS?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a health condition which occurs due to the hormonal imbalance in Women. It may make you suffer from irregular periods, unwanted hair growth, and acne. It’s a common heath problem among teen girls and young women, such that almost every 1 out of 10 women is known to suffer from Pcos. The affected women can experience irregular periods, extra hair on their face, acne, weight gain, and the patches of dark skin on the back of the neck.

In PCOS, your ovaries fail to receive the right hormonal signals from the pituitary gland. These signals are important since without these signals you won’t be able to ovulate (make eggs) every month. This may cause irregularity in your periods or you may not get a period at all.

How Regular Menstrual Cycle Occurs?

Generally, a regular Menstrual Cycle occurs as below.

  • Your menstrual cycle begins when your brain releases the hormone such as LH and FSH to the ovaries.
  • A sudden rush of LH is the signal makes your ovaries to release an egg.
  • Once the egg released, it travels down the fallopian tube and enters into the uterus.
  • If the egg does not fertilize, then the lining of the uterus breaks down. This is called menstrual period.
  • After your menstrual period is over, the cycle starts all over again.

How PCOS Affects The Menstrual Cycle Of The Women?

Women with PCOS have an irregular menstrual cycle. Find below how PCOS affects the women’s menstrual cycle.

  • In the PCOS affected women, LH hormone is usually high when the menstrual cycle starts.
  • As the LH hormone levels are quite high, there is no sudden rush of LH hormone that is called LH surge.
  • Without the LH surge, ovulation does not occur and periods become irregular.
  • Girls with PCOS may ovulate occasionally or may not ovulate. This causes variation in periods, such as some women may not get a period at all or may be too close or far apart.

What Is An Ovarian Cyst?

Polycystic ovaries mean there are a lot of tiny cysts developed inside the ovaries. Some women may have a few cysts and some may have many cysts. Even if you have a lot of cysts, they are not harmful and they need not be removed.

Why Acne & Unwanted Hair Affect Women PCOS?

Acne and unwanted hairs growth occur when the women secrete the hormone called testosterone. Women with PCOS secrete much more amount of testosterone as compared to normal women. Even a small amount of testosterone makes your skin cells and hair follicles sensitive, and this causes acne and unwanted hair growth.

In ultrasound test, the sound waves are used to make a picture of your ovaries, uterus, and bladder. Girls with PCOS usually have slightly larger ovaries (>10cc in volume) and may have multiple tiny cysts.

How PCOS And Infertility Are Related?

Even though women suffering from PCOS tend to have a normal uterus and healthy eggs, many of these women find it difficult to get pregnant while some of them may not face this trouble at all.
