KOREAN SKINCARE // SPF 50 IN A FACIAL OIL???

I've been wanting to talk about this product for several weeks now. Because combining my love for sunscreen and facial oils into one product sounds so up mio strasse!

I'm sure you know very well how diligent and obsessive I am about sunscreen - it is the numero uno anti-ager after all and I, like many of us, am paranoid of aging before my time!

A market that was once exclusively infiltrated with thick lotions, that caused so much whitecast you may as well have plastered yourself in chalk, is now far more sophisticated and up-to-date, with SPF in stick, gel, cushion and even customisable drop form - as explained in my bumper SPF edit if you're after help with what could be best for you.

Something I haven't yet seen however (until a couple of months ago), is SPF in a facial oil. And by SPF, I pretty much mean factor 50, because there's just no need to use less than that these days.

Toly Moly's Multi-Use Sun Oil provides SPF 50, PA++++, broad spectrum protection, in a transparent, oil base. Products like these have been around for yonks for the body, it's a wonder they haven't transferred to facial oils sooner?

Ingredients

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Octyldodecyl Myristate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Dimethicone Homosalate, Ethylhexyl Salicylate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Methyl Trimethicone, Glyceryl Caprylate, Fragrance, Caprylyl Glycol, Rosa Centifolia Flower Oil, Calendula Officinalis Flower Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Seed Oil, Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate, Water, Methylpropanediol, Propanediol, Polyglyceryl-4 Caprate, Water, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate.

The chemical sunscreen active, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, absorbs primarily UVB rays, rather than bouncing them back into the atmosphere. I've been prone in the past to reacting to this particular ingredient but I've happily had zero reaction to this oil. The base also includes a blend of calendula, rose, coconut and raspberry seed oils to soothe, hydrate and brighten.

What's not to love about the packaging? So much so that I think all I need to say is 'rose gold' and 'glass'. On the skin, the oil has, in my mind, a lovely texture. It's entirely the consistency of a dry oil, sinking in readily to my combo skin - I doubt you're going to experience the 'oil slick effect' with a facial oil like this. It layers really nicely with my other skincare or makeup too, making whatever I apply next lovely and emollient and smooth.

What excites me most I suppose about this product - actually, there are two things:

a) there's no hint of whitecasting or flashback.

b) I'm the type who loves to mix in a drop of oil into my foundation to make it apply flawlessly, and applying this just before my base gives me the same effect, with the added benefits of extra SPF.

The marketing claims this is a multi-use oil - one that you can use neat, on face and body, in your hair, or mix into other products. I really wouldn't advocate mixing it in with something else - sunscreens tend not to like being meddled with. To use on your hair is a brilliant suggestion though. I've never paid attention to sun damage with regards to my hair but since using this on my ends, they're a lot less dry, and seem to be richer in colour.

Overall, do I give it a thumbs up? It's a hearty yes.

I'm still a little dubious of it's efficacy, after everything we've been told about applying 1/4 of a tsp etc, and if honest, I'll still likely use this alongside another SPF on my face, but am I glad to have it in my collection? Absolutely. It's a versatile and innovative product, and at the very least, a great way to product your hair.

Have you tried the Tony Moly Sun Oil? Or know of any other SPF Facial oils? I would love to hear your thoughts!
