St John’s Wort: Herbal Help For Depression?

While everyone has periods of sadness in their lives, nearly one in nine Canadian men and women will experience major depressive disorder—or “depression”—in their lives. This very serious mental disorder has potentially fatal results, making proper treatment a must.
Often, men and women with depression are prescribed pharmaceuticals, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). However, some individuals with depression may prefer to go a more natural route with their treatment, as these drugs may cause serious side effects.
St John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) is one such option. In her book Overcoming PMS the Natural Way, Dr. Marilyn Glenville discusses the plant’s well-documented anti-depressant effects, as well as its beneficial effects on the nervous system, tension, and anxiety.

St John’s wort grows in Europe, Asia and America. Its antidepressant effects come from its hypericin content, which has been studied by scientists for its efficacy against this mood disorder.

If you are interested in natural remedies for your depression, visit your doctor or naturopath—St John’s wort may interact with certain medications.
