Top 10 frequently asked questions about laser hair removal

Tired of shaving or waxing? You’ve likely considered Laser Hair Removal, which is a series of treatments designed to remove unwanted body hair permanently. Patients at SpaMedica in Toronto are guaranteed results: if you don’t see a 75% hair reduction at minimum after completion of your laser hair removal program, you get one or more complementary treatments until you achieve the desired results! While most medical spas and laser centers offer just one kind of laser and treatment, we have over 10 lasers to combine and customize treatments for your hair and skin type so you get the best possible outcome.

Here are the 10 most common questions we get about laser hair removal, answered.

  1. How does laser hair removal work?

Laser energy is used to permanently eliminate and reduce the growth of unwanted hair. There are a number of effective laser devices that can accomplish this and Dr. Mulholland uses three major wavelengths of laser and IPL light to optimize the process. The laser energy is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft, and the heat then travels to the stem cells in the top and bottom of the shaft. The heat then kills the actively growing hair bulbs, leading to permanent reduction.

  1. How many laser hair removal treatments does it take to permanently remove hair?

For smaller zones, like the underarms and bikini area, treatments are typically performed every six to 10 weeks and for larger zones like half legs, full legs or the entire back, every eight to 12 weeks is typical. Each treatment takes about 15 to 30 minutes, and patients usually need six treatments. You’re in extra luck however, because the zenith of laser hair removal has its home at SpaMedica: the Titan, aka the “god of hair removal.” It boasts all 3 essential laser wavelengths in one laser, making it optimally effective. Additionally, only the Titan can deliver 2 wavelengths simultaneously! With 2 wavelengths targeting hair bulbs at different depths and sizes, maximal permanent hair removal can be achieved and even guaranteed in the fewest number of treatments.

  1. How long does it take to see results after laser hair removal?

You’ll notice the expulsion of dead hair shafts over one to three weeks following a successful treatment. Over the course of 6 treatments, the laser energy will be able to access all the hair bulbs during their active growth phase (bulbs go through “sleeping” and “active” phases, and are not all synchronized).

  1. Does laser hair removal hurt less each time?

Many patients do note a reduction in pain with each subsequent treatment as hair becomes sparser. For the most part, modern laser hair removal treatments are quite comfortable: SpaMedica laser systems have built-in cooling systems; nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can be inhaled; and a topical anesthetic can be used too.

  1. Does hair grow back after laser hair removal?

Patients who have completed a six-session laser hair removal program and are experiencing a regrowth of resistant hair can come back anytime for a low-cost, quick maintenance session, which will once again provide a prolonged, multi-month period of hairlessness.

  1. Is laser hair removal permanent?

Those hairs that are not permanently reduced will be rendered smaller, finer, lighter, and your hair growth cycles will also become synchronized! Most patients will experience hairlessness for many months following a laser hair removal program at SpaMedica in Toronto.

  1. Why is my hair growing back after laser hair removal?

It’s important to keep in mind that laser hair removal is a series of treatments, not a single session.  Treatments are typically performed when there is regrowth after the previous laser hair removal session, and 6 treatments will result in up to 80% permanent hair reduction in 50% of patients.

  1. Is electrolysis better than laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is faster, more effective, and more efficient than waxing, shaving, or electrolysis. Electrolysis must be spread out over more sessions, as it can’t cover large areas all at once like laser hair removal can. Your choice may depend on how quickly you want results.

  1. Does hair removal work for all hair types?

Patients with light skin and dark hair experience the best results, although, those with darker skin will see success as well. Permanent laser hair removal results on grey, blond, or red-haired patients are usually unsuccessful because there is not enough melanin in these hair shafts to act as a target. The 755 mm Alexandrite lasers, and the 810 nm Diode lasers are very good in combination for white skin with dark hair, while the Diode is good for light and dark skin with dark hair—although more caution is required with careful with very dark skin— and the 1064 nm NdYAG and Diode lasers are best-suited to clients with dark skin and dark hair.

  1. Is laser hair removal bad for your skin?

By selecting the correct wavelength of laser light, we can selectively kill hair, while minimizing any collateral damage to the surrounding skin. During your consultation, hair density, shaft diameter, follicular depth, and skin type will all be taken into account to prescribe the best course of laser treatment for you.
