AIIMS signs Rs 7,600 cr MoUs to build infra, procure equipment

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has signed three Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) worth Rs 7,670 crore to upgrade its infrastructure and procure new equipment for improved healthcare services delivery.

The country’s premiere institute signed an MoU worth Rs 4,441 crore with NBCC (India) Limited, which falls under the Ministry of Urban Development, for redevelopment of 3,060 residential quarters at the Ayur Vigyan Nagar campus and 868 apartments at the West Ansari Nagar campus, media reports said.

The MoU with HSCC (India) Limited, a “Mini Ratna” Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is worth Rs 2,500 crore. Under the agreement, HSCC has been appointed as the project management consultant for the proposed National Cardiovascular Institute at the AIIMS campus at Jhajjar, Haryana.

Under the Rs 729-crore MoU with HLL Infra Tech Services Limited (HITES), an Indian firm specialised in procuring medical equipment and devices in healthcare sector, will procure all types of medical equipment and services including medical gas distribution system, central sterile services department (CSSD), modular operation theatres for the National Cancer Institute in AIIMS at Jhajjar.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Health Minister JP Nadda and Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.

“Innovation for cost effective and affordable healthcare is the need of the day. To take up all these challenge AIIMS needs strengthening and expansion of its facilities. Which we are committed to provide,” media reports quoted Nadda as saying.

The Health Minister called the MoU signing as “historic”, saying it was the largest ever health sector investment commitments made by the Government of India in a public health project at a single event.

The MoUs with NBCC (India), HSCC (India) and HITES were signed, even as AIIMS resident doctors oppose the government’s policy to sell 10 per cent of the institutional land for commercial use to raise funds.
