Tags: floss tool dental

Dental Floss is one of those items you rarely think about. What’s to ponder, after all? It’s just a string you pass between your teeth, right? Well, even though the humble floss is a simple tool, it is a powerful must-have in your dental arsenal! Remember, though–the right floss for you is the one you will use! Here is a simple guide to help you choose!

Types of Floss

So, I’m sure you’re wringing your hands in anticipation. What are the different floss types? There are strings, tapes, yarns, and even electric and water flossers! All are designed to do the same thing–remove plaque bacteria from between your teeth to prevent oral disease. Whatever works best in your hands is the best choice for you! Here is a breakdown into the main categories.

String Floss

  • Multifilament – made from multiple threads of silk or nylon. This is the most common type, it can be waxed or unwaxed and comes in many flavors.
  • Dental Yarn – woven for plaque removal
  • Dental Tape – wide ribbon of nylon used for wider spaces
  • Super Floss – very fine fibers spread out for plaque removal
  • Monofilament – made from single fiber of plastic, rubber, or poly tetrafluoro-ethylene. Monofilament is new technology that is very strong and shred resistant. This works well in tight spaces.

Electric Flossers

  • Fun and easy to use
  • Good for those with reduced dexterity

Water Flossers

  • Fun and easy to use
  • Good for large spaces
  • Good for those with reduced dexterity

Try and See!

There is no right answer when it comes to choosing the best tool for you. The best way to choose is to try a few and see what you like the best.  Don’t forget that the best tool is one that you will use. Have questions? Talk to your dental hygienist about any specific recommendations for you!
