What is Meditation: Introduction and a Beginner’s Guide to do it?

According to the Oxford Dictionary, Meditation is the practice of thinking deeply in silence, especially for religious reasons or in order to make your mind calm. The word meditation comes from the Latin word meditari, meaning to think about or consider. But in our culture, it can be interpreted in various terms. For us, to meditate means to think about taking important decisions, thinking about the future of children et cetera.

In Yogic Science, dhyana is defined as a pure state of consciousness. In Patanjali’s eight-limbed system, dhyana or meditation is the seventh one. After dhyana, the eighth and the last stage is samadhi, which is the state of final liberation and enlightenment.

To put it in plain and simple words, meditation is the practice of concentrating on our thoughts and breathing. The benefits of meditation are manifold. People who have practised meditation admitted they are reaping the benefits of it already. Meditation gives you quality time to know about yourself. As you ponder, you are able to keep a track of your thoughts, breathing and cognitive activities.

5 Different Ways To Meditate

There are many ways to meditate. Usually, people who want to meditate choose to concentrate on any object in front of them. Some choose to recite a mantra, counting thoughts, meditating eyes open, looking at an object and so on. We have listed out 5 different ways to meditate. Keep the spirit high and read on.

1. Sound

The first in five is the adoption of sound. The term for meditation involving the use of sound is called Mantra Yoga. A mantra is a chant, phrase or an affirmation to recite when you meditate. The repetition of the mantra will help a meditating individual to concentrate without getting distracted and disturbed. Normally, Teacher or guru gives the mantra or phrase. But, you have the liberty of choosing your own. Mantras, in general, consist of inspiring and positive words or affirmations.

2. Imagery

The use of imagery is one of the best ways to meditate. However, in this type of meditation, a little extra effort is needed to never go astray in your thoughts. Traditionally, during of meditate, an individual visualizes his or her favourite deity. Some participants visualize some objects or natural objects such as flower and ocean or meditate on the energy centres known as chakras.

3. Gazing

This type of meditation is a variation to imagery. This is an open-eyed approach to meditation. An individual gazes at an object and concentrates on it. You can choose any object you want. Focus your gaze on it and meditate. You have limitless opportunities in this type of meditation.

4. Breathing

Breathing is the most common meditation technique. In this meditating practice, the concentration is on the breathing. Inhaling and exhaling are the crucial factors. Meditating on the breath is to observe every nuance of breath and each sensation it produces. So, here, breath observance plays an important role.

5. Physical Sensations

Observance of Physical Sensations along with breath control is another way of meditation. Along with the breath, observing your physical sensations, feelings and every bit of sensation your body is feeling or undergoing is an effective way to meditate. At times, observing physical sensations is more challenging than breath. People with meditational experience normally practise this type of meditation.
