The Ultimate Guide: How to do Walking Meditation

Walking Meditation is more than a simple walk at the park or in your backyard. This is different from typical sitting meditation. As this involves movements, it is difficult for an individual to concentrate, unlike the one who meditates sitting. Walking Meditation involves either coordination with breathing or specific focusing practices. Walking during this meditation is slower than the normal walking.

However, there are certain general guidelines for walking meditation. These guidelines will help you on your journey to attain peace and contemplative ecstasy.
We have listed down some important guidelines to consider before planning a walking meditation anywhere. Take a tour of the article to know more.

1. Place

The place is the first thing which comes to your mind when you do walking meditation. Initially, you may walk in your backyard. If you prefer to go outside, find a secluded place where you are not disturbed. Doing walking meditation in an enclosed space can be beneficial as it attracts less disturbance.

2. Duration

Beginners practice for 15 minutes. When you are into a much-advanced practice, you can increase the duration of your meditation. Sometimes Buddhist monks do walking meditation for 12 hours a day. That is the fruit of their hard work and practice.

3. Pace

The walking speed plays a vital role in making your meditation fruitful. It is always advised to be slow. If your mind is agitated and in a hurry, you lose the whole essence of the meditation. You cannot focus and concentrate when you are not well settled. When you are slow and steady, you will reap the benefits of walking meditation.

4. Anchoring

Before you walk, it is better to hold for a minute or two. Just spend two minutes there. Take a few breaths. Bring the awareness to your body. Try to know the purpose of you being there. Monitor your thoughts and step on to the floor. Walk at a slow pace. As you further walk, keep the momentum and enjoy the company of yourself.

5. Coming Back

As you meditate, if your mind wanders and you go out of focus, get back and start afresh. No one is perfect. So, do not be disheartened. Just get back and continue.

6. Attitude

You are not doing meditation to achieve something. Keep the attitude of not expecting anything. The meditation is to master your concentration and presence. Be with the process and enjoy the feel.
