Earth Hit By A Space Rock That NASA Observed Only After Impact

A small 4-meter in diameter asteroid collided with Earth, near the city of Lipetsk, Russia, on June 21st, the Metro UK reported today. Even though the diameter of the space rock was too small to do any damage, the news is interesting as the event occurred soon after NASA has presented its new plans on how they want to protect Earth against potential asteroid impacts. Well, in this case, NASA noticed the event only after the space rock hit Earth in Russia, but the US space agency has a good excuse for that.

The US asteroid-detecting sensors picked up the space rock only after impact

The USA runs and operates a network of sensors that was set up to detect asteroids that whizz dangerously close to Earth or are on a collision trajectory with our planet.

But, in the case of this 4-meter asteroid that hit Earth near Lipetsk, Russia, the US sensors for asteroids failed. However, the impact was detected by the US sensors that detect nuclear explosions.

NASA has a good excuse for not detecting this small asteroid which hit Earth on June 21st

Recently, NASA came up with its new plans for identifying and protecting the Earth against space rocks. During the presentation of this new plans, the NASA’s experts also debated a “vulnerability” that makes it practically impossible for NASA to detect asteroid coming towards the “day side” of the Earth.

Apparently, that’s why nobody has detected the 20-meter in diameter asteroid that exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk in 2013, an event during which more than 400 persons suffered injuries and the glasses of dozens of buildings shredded into pieces.

But you don’t have any reasons to worry much about asteroids. The big space rocks that could kill life on Earth are detectable, and their trajectories and behaviors are usually predicted for the next thousand years.
