Bringing Back the Vaccine for Lyme Disease

Lyme Disease is starting to spread in Canada through black-legged ticks due to warmer climate, but only dogs and horses get vaccinated against it. Such climate conditions have lead to about 20% of bugs being able to spread this disease.

Are people actually taking action against this disease?

We are facing with a worrying situation in Canada as the climate gets warmer. So, in 2017, the  federal government announced that it was investing 4 million dollars in research for a cure against Lyme disease. But Tara Moriarty, scientific director of the Canadian Lyme Disease Network, believes that treating this disease is a difficult task because of some doctors who are inexperienced in diagnosing Lyme. During The Current’s broadcast with Gillian Findlay as guest host, she said that it may be a case of discomfort or lack of experience, but it is alarming that family physicians would have problems in giving the right diagnosis. We don’t have time for the government to fund such investigation again or wait for scientists to develop new drugs, we must spread awareness and use our resources wisely.

History proves otherwise…

Indeed, a vaccine for Lyme disease named LYMErix was available for several years in the 1990s, but this was over in 2002. One of the reasons it was taken off the market was that people reported side-effects such as arthritis or joint pain. However, we don’t have any proof of these results.

Sam Telford, who was a member of the development team for the LYMErix vaccine, reported that hundreds of thousands of cases of Lyme disease could have been prevented if the vaccine had been on the market. Even if humans aren’t treated for Lyme and only animals, Sam Telford is determined to restore the vaccine and prevent contracting the disease in the future.
