Overcoming Isolation During Bipolar Depression

For many with bipolar, depressive episodes involve isolating oneself. Knowing the signs can help you find ways of overcoming this challenging symptom.

This is Anja Burcak with bp Magazine’s bphope Vlog. Today, I will be speaking about bipolar Depression and isolation.

One of the main problems with my depressive episodes is the act of withdrawing from life, isolating myself from everyone.

During my first episode, my mind was constantly bombarded with negative thoughts, ones which told me I am not worthy of having friends and I am a burden to my family. This kind of thinking led me to withdraw from people, causing me to sink even further into depression.

Here are some signs of my isolation:

1. Unanswered missed calls, messages, emails and texts that are adding up more than usual
2. Often hearing phrases from others such as “haven’t heard from you in a while…”
3. Little to no social activities in the present or near future, and cancelling any plans that do get made
4. Spending excessive amounts of time with no contact
5. Feeling unworthy of friends, family or a significant other, and like a burden to them

It can become a cycle. Depressive symptoms can lead to isolation. Avoiding people can lead to less contact from others over time, leading to even more depression. Break the cycle!

Tips:

1. Recognize your personal signs of depression and isolation. Make those around you familiar with them, so they can identify when you need help as well!
2. Remember: depression lies! Don’t believe the negative thoughts that bombard your brain and make you think isolation is the best choice.
3. Talk to others. Don’t ignore that phone call or those texts! Lack of interaction with others will only make things worse.
4. Make plans! With depression, just the thought of being around people may seem exhausting. You can keep it simple, like inviting a friend over for a movie night!
