A Lump inside Nose or on side of nose near eye can be a sign of infection or be caused by common causes such as inflamed acne. Depending on the cause and severity, the lump may be painful, red or swollen. Some lumps in this region may as well be hard and painless.

Rarely will serious lumps develop in the nose or near the nose. All the same, it is very important that you know the exact cause of such a lump. You can always visit a clinic for medical diagnosis. This article discusses the common causes of lumps inside and near nose.

Painful or red lump inside nose causes

A painful or red lump inside nose can be caused by;

Folliculitis

Folliculitis is inflamed hair follicles. The inside of the nose has some hairs which trap dust particles. Bacteria and irritation can cause inflammation of hair follicles which results in painful red bumps. Folliculitis is a common cause of lump on pelvis male after shaving caused by irritation.

Nasal vestibulitis

This is a more advanced form of folliculitis inside the nose. It usually results in collections of red or white bumps. Bacteria invasion in hair follicles is the main cause. People who often pick or blow their noses are more likely to develop these bumps.

Boils

When boils form deep in the nose, they are referred to as Nasal furuncles. They are usually very painful, swollen and red. Severe or broken boils can cause cellulitis, a rapidly spreading bacterial infection which can be deadly especially around the nasal region. This is because some blood vessels in the nose lead directly to the brain.

Cysts

A hard lump on nose under skin can be a sebaceous cyst. Sebaceous cysts originate in hair follicles but form under the skin. Since they are filled with keratin, they tend to be hard and firm but some can be soft and slightly movable under the skin. Note that cysts are not as firm as cancer lumps are. Cancer lumps grow on tissues or organs and are therefore firmly fixed. It is also not common to find cancerous lumps under the skin. Most cancer cases are reported in organs such as breasts, colon, prostate and lungs. As for cysts, they usually develop under the skin in forms such as pea sized lump on testicle, soft lump on forehead or painless lump under skin on forearm.

Symptoms of lumps inside nose or on nose sides

Itchy, red and sometimes bumps inside nose, in nose tip or on nose sides are caused by folliculitis. These bumps can also form on the face and other parts of the body. They usually get worse if irritated or picked at. Treatment is not always necessary but can help to keep infection from spreading. Mild cases can be treated at home.

Large, painful, pus-filled and swollen lump deep inside nose is a boil. Boils inside nose usually form in collections of red or white lumps. Treatment is very necessary for these boils. If left untreated, they can cause other serious infections such as cellulitis. Never pick at or pop boils. Otherwise, you may end up with more of them in different parts of your body.

Small projected growths in the nasal linings are known as nasal polyps. Minor ones are not harmful and rarely cause any symptoms. Large ones require treatment for they can affect breathing and cause symptoms such as face swelling, itchiness, headaches and bulging eyes.

Soft and painless lump inside nose

Soft, painless projections on nasal linings are known as nasal polyps. They usually occur in asthmatic individuals, as recurring infections or as autoimmune reactions.

A hard lump on scalp at base of the skull can be caused by a condition known as cavernous sinus thrombosis. It results from severe nasal furuncle. It is quite a serious condition that requires medical attention.

Causes

It is not clear what causes nasal polyps. Most cases are reported in middle-ages. Other risk factors include;

  • Asthma
  • Thick and stick mucus caused by cystic fibrosis
  • Sensitivity to aspirin
  • Allergy to some fungi strains
  • Hereditary factors

Symptoms

Nasal polyps do not cause any pain or symptoms when small. Large ones can block nasal passages and lead to complications such as difficulty breathing and smelling. Other symptoms may include;

  • Chronic runny or stuffy nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Difficulty getting sleep
  • Compromised vision
  • Severe headache
  • Fever
  • Itchiness
  • Swelling and formation of lump on side of nose near eye

Treatment

Treatment is usually done through surgery or anti-inflammatory medications. If your doctor suspects nasal polyps, nasal endoscopy will be performed. This involves inserting a narrow tube equipped with a small lens in the nose. CT scan imaging will enable the doctor to view the exact location and size of the polyps during surgery.

Anti-inflammatory medications for nasal polyps come in form of corticosteroids. Small polyps respond to nasal sprays while larger ones require oral or injected corticosteroids. Your doctor will discuss the options with you.

Prevention

You can prevent or improve nasal polyps symptoms in the following ways;

  • Wash your hands about twice or thrice a day with mild soap and water. After visiting the bathroom or other related activities, wash your hands with medicated soap.
  • Avoid habits such as frequently picking your nose. This can destroy the hairs that trap dust inside the nose leading to more severe asthma.
  • Use humidifiers when the weather is dry
  • Talk with your doctor about managing asthma and its symptoms. If you are highly allergic, your doctor may also suggest ways to keep the allergy in control.
  • Use saline sprays to reduce mucus thickness and get rid of irritants or allergens in your nose.

When to see a doctor for a painful or hard lump on nose

A red lump on side of nose or inside nose is not uncommon. Most people will develop them when dealing with a serious cold. The same cannot be said about a hard lump on nose under skin, especially if it seems to have come out of nowhere.

See your doctor if you can’t seem to find the right explanation for a lump inside your nose or anywhere around the nasal region. Also, seek medical attention for any nasal mass that causes symptoms such as pain, swelling, fever, headaches, swollen lymph nodes and difficulty breathing.
