Here is a healthier way to celebrate Diwali

Diwali is just around the corner. It is the biggest Festival in India and it marks the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair. Diwali is a festival of lights celebrated over a period of 5 days. During Diwali, it seems as if the sky gets bathed in fairy lights of all colours and hues. People draw colourful rangolis in front of their doors and light diyas. It is really beautiful. But the best part of Diwali is the delicious food. The aroma of the festive food wafts through the air, making you happy as well as nostalgic. It brings back floods of memories. Homes and shops are stocked with sweet as well as savoury delicacies. It is a time to laugh, eat and make merry.

But with all the sweets and parties, your health gets ignored. Now, I am not saying that don’t enjoy the festival. Please do, but here are a few ways to do that without compromising your health.

  1. Opt for nuts: Reach out for sweets made of nuts and dry fruits. The nuts and dry fruits will give you vitamins and minerals and the natural sugars will satiate your sweet tooth. Avoid heavy, milk and khoya based sweets. These are loaded with sugar and fats. Even while gifting, avoid sweets and gift mix nuts and dry fruits.
  2. Share your food: Rather than eating a full portion of sweet, share it with someone. This way you will enjoy the food and won’t overeat too.
  3. Stay hydrated: Don’t forget to drink enough water. This is important to keep you hydrated and flush out toxins. You can also opt for nimbu paani, coconut water and buttermilk.
  4. Don’t skimp on vegetables: While at a Diwali party, load up your plate with veggies and salads. Stay away from pooris and naan.
  5. Keep moving: Festival is not a reason to stay away from being physically active. If you cant exercise, go for walk or take the stairs or just stretch.
  6. Relax and enjoy: Don’t fuss too much over calories. Many people obsess over the calories and end up starving themselves. Don’t do that. Enjoy the festive season to the fullest. Spread the love, to others and to your own self.
