Texas A&M and the University of Texas Profit Makers

Mega Doctor News

Texas Tribune

Most of the state’s major athletics programs once again failed to generate a profit for the 2016-2017 sports year, with Texas State University capping off the year more than $25 million in the red and another five schools recording losses of more than $10 million.

Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Austin were again the only profit-makers, raking in $65 million and $7.8 million more than they spent, respectively. But A&M will have to use that extra revenue to foot the bill on its new football stadium.

Texas sports departments commonly spend more money than they earn, making up for it with student fees and transfers from their universities’ general funds. Six schools used more than $116 million from those two sources combined to give their athletics departments a boost in 2016-2017 alone. A&M and UT-Austin didn’t rake in student fees or other funds, according to reports.
