Introduction

Varicose Veins have been reported to affect about 36% of women and 19% of men. Although Varicose Veins are most commonly seen in the legs, they can form anywhere in the body and can vary in severity.

Causes

In healthy individuals, the blood inside the veins is easily pumped back to the heart. If a varicose vein, this mechanism is affected resulting in the accumulation of blood within them. Numerous causes have been identified to be associated with the incidence of varicose veins. The inheritance has been proposed as the main cause of varicose veins. In some cases, certain birth defects may be the possible cause.

In other cases, such as those listed below, varicose veins can occur due to increased tension in the veins. Pregnant women may suffer from a transient type of varicose veins. Increased incidence of varicose veins is also seen in people who stand for long periods (e.g. working at the counter).

Treatment Options for Varicose Veins

A wide variety of options is available for the treatment of varicose veins. These options are individualized for each case and are selected based on factors such as the size of varicose veins, its location and severity of the disorder. Clinics that offer vein treatment services can offer a combination of one or more treatment options in some cases.

Nonsurgical Treatment

This option is considered either as a standalone therapy or in combination with conservative measures personal care. Nonsurgical as the name suggests is a minimally invasive treatment procedure that does not involve any major surgical correction and does not require the individual to undergo the procedure for admission to the hospital. Some of the non-surgical treatment options include:

·       sclerotherapy
·       Laser therapy or radiofrequency ablation
·       Ambulatory phlebectomy
·       vein ligation

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy procedure is aimed at closing the affected veins permanently by scarring them. A chemical solution is injected into the affected veins gradually it induces scarring within these veins. The affected vein closes once dense scar tissues are formed within them and the blood continues to flow through the other healthy veins in the vicinity. Sclerotherapy is a simple vein treatment service and does not require general anesthesia.

Laser therapy or radiofrequency ablation

Laser therapy involves using amplified to produce the closure of the affected veins light. Radio waves may also be used to cause a similar result. During this procedure done under local anesthesia, a small tube is passed into the affected vein and through which is passed the laser or radio frequency device to generate heat within the vein thus resulting in its closure. The blood flow in this region is taken by the other healthy veins.

Ambulatory phlebectomy

This procedure is used in the treatment of small varicose veins. Affected sections of the veins are removed through a series of incisions placed on the skin. Ambulatory phlebectomy is performed under local anesthesia.

Vein ligation

Procedure vein ligation is used to treat large varicose veins. The objective of this procedure is to prevent the blood from entering affected by blocking the entry point vein. This vein treatment service requires local anesthesia after an incision is made in the skin to identify the affected vein. The affected vein is tied with some specialized to block blood flow through its material. Blood flow continues leg through other healthy veins.
