Get Motivated, One Step at a Time

The following image was used in my previous post, as an example to demonstrate how symbols are used in my art journals.

A year ago, I left my full-time job to work as an independent art therapist.
One of the benefits of working for yourself is being your own boss, and having the Complete freedom and flexibility of getting things done whenever you want, wherever you want. On the flip side, there's also a lot more work, responsibilities, and pressure involved. The requirement for constant self-motivation is a must, as you have no one else to depend on but yourself.

I created the following drawing recently to express how I've been feeling lately- both mentally and physically. Creating this image was my first step in acknowledging my feelings, and my attempt to take action in making some changes for the better. The initial creative process of my artwork was parallel to how I felt at the time- stuck, uninspired, and lost.

The drawing felt incomplete, but I wasn't sure what was missing.

Creativity is a wonderful and unpredictable thing; it comes and goes as it please, and is not something that can be forced out. When I returned to my drawing a few days later, a sudden flow of inspiration came over me, and right there and then, I knew exactly how I wanted to complete my work.

I am completely satisfied with the extended version of my drawing, it inspired new narratives, thoughts, and feelings, and brought along a new sense of purpose, drive, and positivity.

Narrative

Your first step is to get up.

You need to stop thinking about work, or anything else that's weighing you down.

You need to find something, anything to help you get up- all you have to do is look around, it may just be right in front of you.

Reflection

Let's face it- as much as we want to be productive and Motivated everyday, it's just not that easy.

We know what we need to do, and are fully aware of what needs to get done, but getting started is always the hardest part. The more we push things back, the harder it gets- we will only end up feeling more overwhelmed as things progressively add up.

So what can we do?

We take it one step at a time.

The first step is to get the engine started, but sometimes we simply just can't do it ourselves, and will need to seek help from someone, or something to give us a little push/pull.
