TO THIS DAY, the responsibility of pregnancy prevention has largely fallen on those gifted with the double X chromosome. Why? Well, women who have no desire to get pregnant have a buffet of contraceptive options to choose from. If you’re a female the options to insert, swallow, or inject a form of contraception are many. But now, research is proving that hormonal pregnancy prevention may not solely be the responsibility of the ladies. Recent studies indicate that the Male Birth control pill is just as effective as the traditional option made for the opposite sex. The pill is a prodrug, dimethandrolone undecanoate, which in the body is converted to a modified testosterone, dimethandrolone. Dimethandrolone blocks hormone signaling and testosterone production responsible for increasing sperm counts. Blocking this pathway causes a drop in Sperm Production, leading to low chances of insemination. In a study that took place at the University of Washington Medical Center, men between the ages of 18 and 50 were assigned to 3 treatment groups and prescribed 100, 200, and 400 mg pills.
