21 Things I’ve Learned from 21 Years of Dealing with Scoliosis

  1. You have to forgive and accept—yourself, mostly.
  2. The use of medical equipment for assistance, such as canes, walking sticks, and back braces, doesn’t change who you are.
  3. High-heels are so over-rated; practical comfy shoes like Clarks are the way to go.
  4. People can be really, really mean.
  5. Dealing with scoliosis is like navigating a maze—you will run into a lot of dead ends.
  6. Squatting down is a much easier way to pick things up than bending over.
  7. People do not see scoliosis the same way you do.
  8. A pretty dress and makeup can make you feel so much better.
  9. You don’t have to sit down if you don’t want to.
  10. It’s okay to leave the party when you’re ready to go, but it’s also okay to overdo it; If you’re having fun, you can always rest tomorrow.
  11. Sometimes it’s okay to be knowingly selfish.
  12. Even if you think you can’t, try anyway.
  13. Scars can be used to tell fun fantasy stories to your nieces and nephews. Like how you got into a fight with a pirate, or a shark tore you half open, and of course, you have the scar to prove it.
  14. When you have a good day, really live it.
  15. There is more than one way to walk up a hill—backward works too.
  16. You are more than your scoliosis.
  17. Bubbling in a jacuzzi can aid most alignments.
  18. Smiling through the pain is a skill, and if you’ve had scoliosis pain long enough, you will master it.
  19. Feeling hopeless doesn’t make you weak.
  20. Hard beds are so much better than soft beds.
  21. Slow and steady will get you where you need to go.
