Piles or Hemorrhoids are Blood vessels located in the smooth muscles of the walls of the anus and rectum. Sometimes they swell so that the vein walls become stretched, thin and irritated by passing bowel movements. There are two kinds of Hemorrhoids - Internal and External.
External hemorrhoids also known as perianal hematoma. These little lumps will be located on the edge of the anus. They will be very itchy and can be painful if a blood clot forms inside (thrombosed external hemorrhoid). Internal hemorrhoids are located above the pectinate line and are covered with cells that are the same as those lines in the rest of the intestines.
Causes
The swelling of Hemorrhoid occurs when there is an increase in the pressure in the small vessels. This makes the hemorrhoid to swell and engorge with blood. This increased pressure may be caused by a variety of factors:
- Prolonged sitting on the toilet may increase pressure within the hemorrhoid blood vessels
- Obesity
- Diarrhea, both acute and chronic
- Colon cancer
- Previous rectal surgery
- Spinal cord injury and lack of erect posture
Symptoms
The most common symptoms of Hemorrhoid includes:
- Painless bleeding
- Swelling and feeling a lump at the anus are all associated with an inflamed hemorrhoid.
- A hard lump may be felt around the anus. It consists of coagulated blood, called a thrombosed external hemorrhoid. This can be painful
- A feeling that bowels are full even after going to toilet.
- Bright red blood after a bowel movement
- Itchiness around the anus
- Mucus discharge when emptying the bowels
- Pain while defecating
- The area around the anus may be red and sore
