Dental Health is Vital: Simple Practices That Will Help to Keep Your Teeth Healthy

As a child you normally visit the dentist when your parents decide and probably under protest. As you grow older it becomes your decision as to how you intend to look after your Teeth. So often apart from a quick, early morning brush that’s about the maximum amount of time you typically spend on your oral health. However in recent years it’s been discovered that a quick daily brush isn’t good enough.

There are indications that poor oral hygiene is connected to some quite serious diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and complications during pregnancy. If the teeth are neglected and tooth loss is the result this can deny you the chance of eating a healthy diet based on crunchy fruit and vegetables. It also means you are likely to be in an Emergency Dental Situation which could mean pain and dental extractions.

Brushing and Flossing

Brush your teeth twice a day using a toothbrush with soft bristles and toothpaste that includes fluoride. Brush after you have finished eating breakfast, and just before you go to bed. If you have stopped eating and drinking earlier you can do your evening brush then.   If your teeth are prone to sensitivity try using a toothbrush with bristles that are extra soft.

As long as you don’t rush your brushing time a tooth brush with extra soft bristles can do a very good job.  Floss at least once per day, using dental floss that can penetrate the tighter spaces between your teeth. This should be done before brushing. If your teeth are very close together try using floss that’s waxed or some specialist dental tape.

Rinsing Your Mouth Keeps it Clean

Rinse your mouth with mouthwash which has been recommended by your dentist. There are some available that contain fluoride. After using mouthwash, you shouldn’t drink, eat or rinse out your mouth for at least thirty minutes. Most of us don’t carry a toothbrush and toothpaste let alone mouthwash around with us wherever we go, so an easy solution to this is to rinse out your mouth with plain water. This can be found practically anywhere and it does a good job loosening all those food particles that will soon be wedged in and between your teeth after you have eaten a midday meal.

Chewing Gum Reduces Damaging Acid

Chewing gum that’s sugar free and contains xylitol will kill the bacteria that cause cavities. It might surprise you that gum typically encourages the production of saliva in your mouth which helps to lower acid levels. It’s a good idea to chew gum for around twenty minutes once you have finished eating.

These are the practical things you can do at home without even lifting the phone to arrange a consultation with a dentist. They help you to avoid an emergency dental situation which could involve pain and early tooth loss.  However, whatever you can do practically is no substitute for a twice yearly appointment with your dentist who can check for oral health problems that can’t be handled on their own. By doing this you are on the road to the best methods of maintaining long term healthy teeth.
