Menopause can be defined as “the 12 months’ time after your last menstrual period” and it marks the end of menstrual cycle. Menopause can happen in your 40s or 50s. On average menopause occurs at about 50 years of age in most women in most countries. Menopause is natural physiological process and it marks the end of fertility. However, after menopause women can be healthy, vital and sexual activity can be maintained normally. In fact, some women become tension free because they do not need to worry about pregnancy any more. However, in many women menopause is associated with various signs and symptoms (although it is biological/physiological), such as hot flashes, emotional symptoms (anxiety, sadness etc.), sleep disturbances etc. If you have any symptoms due to menopause, seek medical attention.
What are the symptoms of menopause?
The months and years preceding menopause is known as peri-menopause and during this time, you may experience various symptoms such as,
- Irregular menstrual periods
- Hot flashes
- Sweating during night time
- Sleep disturbances
- Dryness of vagina
- Emotional problems such as sadness, anxiety, sense of loss etc.
- Weight gain
- Low level of metabolism
- Thinning of hairs and dryness of skin
- Loss of breast fullness
Irregularity of menstrual periods preceding menopause is common, although some women may experience regular period until the last period and it stops abruptly. Menstrual period may become irregular in length or you may miss one or two periods. Although menstrual periods become irregular or you miss a few periods during perimenopause, it is possible to become pregnant during this period. Hence, you need to be extra cautious regarding pregnancy and take necessary precautions to prevent pregnancy during menopause.
If you are experiencing some menopausal symptoms, consult your doctor and keep visiting your doctor regularly. Your doctor may also advise you to undergo some screening tests to rule out some medical conditions that can occur during menopausal years.
