DIY House Moving

The main concern of Singaporeans with hiring a professional house movers is usually the cost. Many feel that they can move the stuff themselves with the exception of a few Heavy Items. With this thinking comes the thought of a Do-It-Yourself House Moving.  However, it is actually not as simple as it seems and below are some tips and tricks to make this journey a much smoother experience.

  1. TIME – always ensure enough time is given for relocation. Pick a moving date 3-4 months in advance and work backwards from there.

You Must!:

  • Have a plan for what to do each week
  • Make a complete budget, listing every possible move expense( boxes, truck rentals etc)
  • Take inventory – Decide what is going to your new home and what can be sold/thrown away.

THE PACKING

Based on your inventory list, estimate packing supplies and order them several weeks in advance. You can order them from carton box companies, find them in your local hardware store or use recycled cardboard boxes from local supermarkets.

Some common packing items include:

  • cardboard boxes
  • bubble wrap
  • masking tape
  • duct tape
  • cling wrap
  • labels and markers

Start by packing rarely used items and try to pack as much as possible into boxes which provide extra protection.

For heavy items, there are several ways to handle the moving.

  • dismantling and assembling
  • locate a professional moving company for the moving of heavy items (pros of this is the insurance they cover as well as the overall ease of moving)
  • call a few friends to move it together after wrapping it up with several layers of protection (but ensure that it can fit into the truck/lorry you rented)

TIPS!

  • place electronics back into their original packaging
  • Mark each box by colour coding them as you go, by room and contents
  • Soft items—sofa cushions, pillows, stuffed animal collections—can be packed in plastic bags and used as bumpers between hard items, such as dressers and tables.
  • Leave clothing in dresser drawers
  • wrap the furniture with protective bubble wrap/ blankets especially fragile items like dishes!
  • start planning where your furniture and belongings will go in your new house

THE MOVING– 2 ways to do it, either hire a professional moving company or rent a truck.

If you decided to rent a truck…

You Must!:

  • ensure your truck has a ramp
  • ensure you have a moving trolley
  • ensure your heavy items can fit into the truck
  • ensure you are comfortable with driving the truck on the streets ( Class 4 licence)/ have a friend that have the licence

TIPS!

  • Load the floor of the truck with cardboard/plastic (for protection and hygiene)
  • Create a loading order- heavier items go in the back, lighter items in the middle and other heavy items can be added at the end to help hold everything in place
  • The tighter you pack everything into the truck, the better (less items will shift and become damaged)
  • obtain price quotes from a minimum of three
  • beware of hidden cost such as insurance for the rental truck

if you decided to hire a Professional Moving company… (A.K.A pack everything yourself and we move service)

You Must!

  • Know how they are calculating the moving price, by Weight? Lorry load? Or by number of items?
  • Get a written quotation before coming to any agreement
  • Know if GST is included in the move

TIPS!

  • Pack your valuables into a Day Bag so that they will be with you at all times
  • Obtain price quotes from a minimum of three

NOTIFICATIONS

Ensure all relevant organisations (banks, credit card companies, insurance companies) know of your change in address.

TIPS!

  • Go to your nearest neighbourhood police post to inform them of the change of address. (by doing this, all government organisations will be notified of your change in address and services like utilities will automatically be transferred to your new house within 1 week of notification)
  • You may also obtain your new IC there.
