What’s Making the News in the World of Vape

Irish Government Prefers Drugs Over Vaping

The Irish Government has chosen to ignore the benefits of e-cigarettes as a Smoking cessation aid and continues to promote a ‘dangerous’ alternative.

A new report from the Health Information and Quality Authority [HIQA] says the Government could save cash on the estimated €40million currently spent on smoking cessation medications if it encouraged more smokers to quit using Vaping – but shies away from promoting it!

Instead they seem quite happy to let smokers desperate to quit use a concoction of Nicotine patches and the drug varenicline – despite the dangerous and possibly deadly side effects.

Please check our article Suicide or Vaping to see the link between the drug – including devastating mental health issues and even death.

Director of Health Technology Assessment Dr Máirín Ryan said:

Today’s HTA of smoking cessation interventions recommends using varenicline (either alone or in combination with nicotine replacement therapy) for smokers wishing to use some type of pharmacological support in their attempt to quit.
The HSE should seek to increase the uptake of varenicline, either alone or in combination with NRT (nicotine patches), among smokers who wish to use pharmacological support in their quit attempt.

Dr Ryan says that despite ‘promising results’ on trials with smokers using e-cigarettes to quit – she thinks the Irish Government should wait for more studies to be conducted:

A decision to advocate e-cigarette use should take into consideration any additional information on the long-term safety of e-cigarettes use, and any emerging data in relation to concerns about the social normalization of e-cigarettes leading to increased uptake among people who have never smoked, or later migration to tobacco cigarettes.

There’s an estimated 820,000 smokers in the Republic of Ireland many of whom are desperate to quit with one in three trying at least once per year with one in five dying from smoking related diseases.

Maybe and if the Government stopped pushing dangerous drugs and promoted e-cigarettes the numbers would drop significantly.

But don’t hold your breath.

Sheffield Smokers Desperate to Quit Needed

Smokers from Sheffield are being asked to volunteer for a study on e-cigarettes.

Hallam University needs more than 250 people to look at the effect vaping has on quitting smoking.

Researchers say the six month long study will look at three different smoking cessation methods:

They will be split into three groups – one using nicotine rich e-cigarettes, another nicotine-free e-cigarettes and the third nicotine replacement therapy from Sheffield’s stop smoking services.

Senior researcher Dr Markos Klonizakis said:

Although they may have an inclination which group they would like to be, they should be ready to follow the group they are in.

Pub Garden Smoking Ban Rejected

The luvvies from London have failed in their attempt to get smoking [and vaping] banned from all pub gardens in the UK.

A team of council killjoys supported by London mayor Sadiq Khan had called on the Government to apply the ban.

Haringey council called for the ban citing reports from ‘health experts’ including Labour supporter and surgeon Lord Darzi who said:

If we are to celebrate the cultural and community assets that parks and community spaces represent and to protect children and young people from the normalising effect of observed smoking behaviours, then extending the smoking ban to other public spaces will have a positive effect.
Expanding smoking prohibition to broader public spaces will undoubtedly have a positive effect on our population’s health.

Whilst he was London Mayor Boris Johnson had called the move ‘bossy and nannying’.

Tory minister for local government – Marcus Jones MP said:

Labour’s municipal killjoys have been caught with a smoking gun, trying to ban adults enjoying their local pub garden. If implemented, these ill-founded proposals would lead to massive pub closures.

Vaping And Your DNA

Call me an old cynic but the announcement this week that vaping does significantly less harm to your DNA than smoking left me with a wry smile.

Of course I’m happy that a study positive to the switch from smoking to e-cigarettes is out there – but just look at who has conducted it.

That would be cigarette industry giant British American Tobacco [BAT] who launched the Vype e-cigarette brand a few years ago.

Using hi-tech 3D images of a human airway – different levels of vaporized nicotine was inhaled for an hour.

The effects were measured by how many times the genes involved ‘switched on and off’.

Head BAT researcher Dr James Murphy said:

Our results clearly show that cigarette smoke has an adverse effect on cells, triggering a robust gene expression response.
However, even at equivalent or higher dose of nicotine, acute exposure to the test e-cigarette vapour has very limited impact on gene expression compared to cigarette smoke exposure – it’s a striking difference.

Good news indeed and tobacco expert Professor Peter Hajek welcomed the findings but called for an independent study adding:

The paper comes from the cigarette industry and it would be good to get these results replicated by independent researchers. And, also with other types of e-cigarettes.However, I would expect that the findings of any independent replication would be similar.
From the point of view of readers who smoke and who were put off trying e-cigarettes by the various anti-vaping scares, the study results support what the common sense and the knowledge about e-cigarettes gathered so far suggests, vaping is, by a big margin, much less risky than smoking.

BTW the same BAT research team released a report 2 years ago stating their Vype ePen was 95% safer than a normal cigarette.

Big Tobacco promoting e-cigs and vaping as a safer alternative – ummm wonder what that’s all about.

SMOK Do NOT Produce E-Liquid

I’m a little late with this but feel it’s important enough to add to this week’s vaping news.

Photos of an e-liquid range apparently produced by vaping giants SMOK are fake.

Under the delightful heading ‘A solemn Statement about FAKE SMOK e-liquid’ the company urges the public and wholesalers to avoid the juices:

We have no production of any SMOK e-liquid at the present and we never authorized any e-juice enterprises to sell any SMOK e-liquid.

All e-liquid with SMOK trademark are fakes and SMOK has nothing to do with these fakes.

For manufacturing and selling e-liquid with SMOK trademark, we think that it is a serious trademark infringement violation and we will pursue for legal responsibility.

Concerning this kind of e-liquid, we suggest consumers and global partners do not promote ,sell or purchase in order to avoid unnecessary loss.

For all kinds of disputes and loss arises from producing, selling and buying this e-liquid, you have to suffer the consequences and SMOK would not undertake any legal responsibility.

Breaking Vaping News

At the time of publishing this weeks Vaping News – it’s understood that President Trump has called for the resignation of anti-vape surgeon general Vivek H. Murthy.

His replacement Rear Adm. Sylvia Trent-Adams appears to be ‘pro-vaping’ whilst Murthy most definitely was not.

anti vaping

Just why he has been removed is unclear however rumours are rife it’s down in part to his reluctance to support vaping as a viable alternative for American smokers.

We’ll keep an eye on this and let you know next week if there’s any more news.
