Brawl Stars Mobile Game Review (Android/IOS)

Back in 2012 when Clash Of Clans was released, it became one of the most popular games around the world that it became one of the highest gross earnings in a mobile game. Then came Clash Royale which is also super popular with the tower defence PvP multiplayer. And now, Supercell has released a new multiplayer PvP game for the Mobile which takes on a much different approach.

Gameplay

You will start out with only one character at the beginning of the game which is Shelly, the woman with the shotgun. The controls are very easy to learn actually, you can move around your brawler, you can aim and shoot at a designated position. This game has an auto-aim system which shoots at the nearest enemy brawler/object. Though sometimes the auto-aim for some Brawlers will often miss a lot so sometimes it’s better to aim and shoot instead.

Your brawler has an HP bar and 3 bars of the orange bar which every attack will use up a single bar and once its empty, you cannot shoot until the orange bar recharges. For every successful attack on an enemy brawler, you will gain a small amount of charge to your super ability which once its full, you can tap it to unleash its super ability of the brawler.

Game Modes

There are 3 different modes plus 1 special Mode which are rotating event modes. The first one is what most people would play which is the Gem Grab where you will be placed in a 3 vs 3. The objective is that your team must collect gems for your team until it reaches the countdown phase which your team must hold on to their gems until the countdown ends to win the match. You can make your enemy brawlers drop their gems by killing them but they can also do the same thing to you so be cautious especially if anyone in the team including your brawl obtains a lot of gems.

The second mode is called Showdown which if you play battle royale games, you will realise that this mode is a mini version of it. You will be placed with 9 other brawlers and survive as long as you can to be the last one standing. There are energy crates in the map where you can destroy it to obtain energy elixir which each elixir gains your brawler HP by 400 and attack damage by 10%. There are bushes similar to all modes where you can hide and ambush enemy brawlers and a toxic gas which will be closing in the further the match goes. Similar to Gem Grab, killing an enemy brawler drops their current number of energy elixirs.

The third mode is Heist which is similar to base defence. You will be placed in a 3 vs 3 where the objective is to destroy the enemy’s safe while protecting your own team’s safe in a limited amount of time. If either of the safe gets destroyed, the match will automatically go to the team who destroys it. If none of the safes gets destroyed when the time runs out, which either team’s safe that has the highest remaining health will become the victor.

Overall I really love the variety of the different modes in the game as each mode has its own objective to win the match which most multiplayer mobile games fall short on.

Brawler customization

There are up to 21 brawlers in the game but you have to unlock them in order to use the brawlers so that is where the so-called pay to win comes in. You can unlock them using green gems or through league rewards which we will cover more on that later.

Each brawler requires a certain number of power points in order to level them up to increase their overall stats. You can obtain those through boxes using coins/green gems or through keys which you will obtain after a match or star keys which you will have to complete a certain objective to obtain.

Every brawler has its own unique interaction and attacks together with its own super ability like throwing more bombs in a specific area or heals a friendly brawler. Some brawlers also has its own unique skins which can only be unlocked through green gems.

Progression

You will gain trophies for every won match and lose trophies if you lose a match. These trophies are like your rank which gaining trophies unlock certain rewards such as boxes, power points, coins but most importantly you will unlock new brawlers.

I would say for beginners, be prepared to lose a lot in the early stages of the game since the matchmaking in this game is not very good as you will always be playing against players who has better brawlers or high-level brawlers which are super OP which you will be stuck in a certain rank for a very long time.

Tip: This game has a tier list for every mode where some brawlers will perform better than other. You can check out this reddit thread by Golden Spike! to help you prioritize which brawlers to use and level up.

Verdict

That being said, this game is quite enjoyable for me and its alot more fun if playing with friends. With its high-intensity gameplay, this game really brings the X-factor for players who wanted a very competitive multiplayer experience. If only this game has more brawlers at the start to choose from that would great for beginners to try out.

The Good:

– Controls are very simple

– Great roster of different brawlers

– Game modes are pretty well-designed

The Bad:

– Matchmaking is unbalanced

– Pay-to-win for beginners in order to unlock brawlers
