Fix: Microsoft Security Essentials Windows Update error 0x80248014

This Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) error is linked to Windows Updates feature of Windows operating system. Normally users see this error code when they using Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7, but users running Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 also receiving the same error code.

To help Windows users I decided to write this post in which you will read about possible ways to fix error 0x80248014 when updating Microsoft Security Essentials. So here goes the first one:

1.Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter

One of the best ways to get rid of this error code is by running inbuilt Windows Update Troubleshooter. Normally there are two ways to run Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Search Command Prompt in Start menu search bar and when it appears in the search result make right-click on it and Run as administrator. In the command window execute the following command:

msdt.exe /id WindowsUpdateDiagnostic

Alternatively, you can launch the Settings app -> Update & security -> Troubleshoot (Left pane) -> Click on Windows Update Troubleshooter (Right pane). Click on Run the troubleshooter. Now troubleshooter will start detecting the problem and try to fix the issue automatically.

In case, this doesn’t help to fix the issue, you can also try online Windows Update troubleshooter.

2. Run Windows Update in Clean Boot State

You can also run Windows Update in Clean Boot State to troubleshoot the issue. For that,

1. Press WIN + R to launch RUN dialog box.

2. Type msconfig and click OK to launch the System Configuration Utility.

3. Under Selective Startup uncheck Load startup items. Also, make sure Load System Services and Use Original boot configuration are checked.

4. Switch to Services tab and here check the box which reads Hide all Microsoft Services. After that click on Disable all button.

5. Now click Apply | OK and Reboot your system.

This will fix the issue. In case, this doesn’t help you again launch the System Configuration Utility and again check Load startup items option Apply | OK and Reboot your system. And try the next method

3. Delete Software Distribution folder

Some users reported that they fixed the issue by deleting or renaming the SoftwareDistribution folder. Here is how it can be done:

Launch the Command Prompt as Administrator. For that, search the CMD or Command prompt in Taskbar search and when it appears in result make right-click it and Run as administrator.

In the command prompt window type following commands back to back and hit Enter:

net stop WuAuServren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.oldnet start WuAuServ
net start WuAuServ

Once done, Reboot your system. Now again try to update Microsoft Security Essentials and check if this fixes the issue.
