In order to change the media settings, go to settings >> Media in WordPress dashboard and configure the image sizes as per your needs.

The default image sizes of WordPress are a thumbnail, medium, large and the original size. WordPress allows you to change the media settings under WordPress settings that will affect newly uploaded images.

Once you uploaded the images, WordPress will store the original images without doing any modifications. After it becomes an attachment when it is inserted to any post, system will modify the dimensions to the original image as per media settings.

The first option under media settings is image sizes.

Image Sizes:

This lets you determine the maximum dimensions in pixels to use when adding an image to the media library.

An Administrator can set the dimensions in pixels for Thumbnail size, Medium size and Large size. WordPress will even crop the images for thumbnails to fit the dimensions that you mentioned here. For medium and large size images maximum dimensions can be defined so that they do not exceed the defined dimensions when they are sized.

The second option under media settings is uploading files.

This allows you to select where to store all your uploaded files and to choose whether to organize all your media uploads into month and year wise folders.

By default WordPress stores all your uploaded files in a month and year wise folders in uploads directory like wp-content/uploads/2018/09 if you uncheck the box your uploaded files will be stored in wp-content/uploads folder.
