What is a Homepage in WordPress?

The term Home or Homepage is referred to the front page or main page of your website. By default, WordPress will show your posts in reverse chronological order (most recent post appears first) on your website home page.

How to Create a Custom Homepage for WordPress Website?

You can add a static homepage to your website as the front page and need to assign another page to publish your posts. Follow this step by step guide to create a custom Homepage for WordPress Website.

Step 1: Before assigning a static front page to your website, you need to create and publish home page and blog page on your WordPress website.

Create a Home Page:

In your WordPress dashboard, go to Settings >> Pages and click on add new to create a new page and name it as Home.

Under page attributes, select the appropriate template from the drop-down box under templates. Most WordPress themes comes with custom page templates to change the look for static front pages. If your theme has front page template option, select the same from the drop-down list or select default template.

Do not add any content in the content area and hit publish.

Create a Blog Page:

Next, you need another page for blog posts. In the same way, create another page and name it as Blog.

Under page attributes, select the appropriate template from the drop-down box under templates. A lot of WordPress themes comes with Blog template. If your theme has Blog template option, select the same from the drop-down list or select default template.

Do not add any content in the content area and hit publish.

Step 2: We have created 2 pages to display a homepage and Blog page. Now we need to assign these 2 pages to work accordingly.

In your WordPress dashboard, go to Settings >> Reading settings.

Now Select the option of A Static page and select a home page from available pages drop-down list for the front page and Blog page for Posts page.

Step 3: The page assigned to the front page of your website will display the static information of your website and can be customized with welcome instructions, featured content and specific articles.

The page assigned to the Blog page of the website need to add in your website header navigation menu.

Go to Appearance > Menus.

Select a Header menu.

Click on pages to expand it. Now select the Blog Page and click on add to the menu button to add the blog page on your website header menu. Blog page now will appear on the right side menu structure. You can move them up and down by dragging the menu item.

Now click on save menu and visit your website to see the changes.
