But how do you remember how to calculate them? Believe it or not, it’s quite a common question. In fact it’s asked on Google over 24,000 times a month. So we’ve put this guide together on how to calculate percentages so you can solve those equations in no time.

Below I cover the following:

    • How To Calculate Percentage Increase
    • How To Calculate Percentage Decrease
    • How To Convert Decimals To Percentages
    • How To Convert Fractions To Percentages
    • How To Calculate The Percentage Of Two Numbers

How To Calculate Percentage Increase

For the example below, we’ll use the following details:
Number 1 = 1,000
Number 2 = 1,700
  1. In order to calculate percentage increase, you first need to work out the increased difference between the two numbers
    (Number 2 – Number 1 = Increased Difference)
    Example: 1,700 – 1,000 = 700
  2. Then divide the increase by the original number and multiply the answer by 100.
    (Increased Difference / Number 1 x 100 = Percentage Increase)
    Example: (700 / 1000) x 100 = 70
  3. Therefore the percentage increase was 70%

How To Calculate Percentage Decrease

For the example below, we’ll use the following details:
Number 1 = 2,000
Number 2 = 1,600
  1. In order to calculate percentage decreaase, you first need to work out the decreased difference between the two numbers
    (Number 1 – Number 2 = Decreased Difference)
    Example: 2,000 – 1,600 = 400
  2. Then divide the decrease by the original number and multiply the answer by 100.
    (Decreased Difference / Number 1 x 100 = Percentage Decrease)
    Example: (400/2,000) x 100 = 20
  3. Therefore the percentage decrease was 20%

How To Convert Decimals To Percentages

For the example below we’ll use the following:
Decimal = 0.25
  1. In order to convert a decimal to a percentage, you simply multiply your decimal number by 100
    Example: 0.25 x 100 = 25
  2. The answer is now your percentage, i.e. 25%
  3. If the decimal was longer than two digits, i.e. 0.2518, then the answer would be 25.18%

How To Convert Fractions To Percentages

For the example below we’ll us the following details:
Fraction = 6/8
  1. In order to convert the fraction to a percentage, you first need to divide the top of the fraction by the bottom
    Example: 6 / 8 = 0.75
  2. Then multiply your answer by 100. This is now converted to a percentage.
    Example: 0.75 x 100 = 75%

How To Calculate The Percentage Of Two Numbers

For the example below we’ll use the following details:
Number 1 = 35
Number 2 = 75We want to calculate what percent 35 is of 75.
  1. In order to find out what percentage Number 1 is of Number 2, we first divide Number 1, by Number 2.
    Example: 35 / 75 = 0.46
  2. Then multiply the answer by 100 to get the percentage.
    Example: 0.46 x 100 = 46%

That’s it. Hopefully you now know how to calculate percentages and understand how easy it is.
